Seven things to look out for as the Queen lies in state | UK News

It has been seven decades since the previous monarch died, so the UK is no longer accustomed to the traditions and beauty pageants that have been on display since the Queen’s death last week.

After the Royal procession and bowing, it is now the turn of the public to say goodbye to the Queen while she is in office.

Ten thousand people lined up for hours to see her coffin in Westminster Hall, where monarchs have been in power for more than a century.

The Queen is in a state – latest update

Here is a guide to what to look out for in the hall.

Queen crown

1. Royal Crown

The Queen wore the tiara upon her coronation in 1953. It has also been used on other occasions such as the opening of the state parliament.

The crown is made of gold and is set with 2,868 diamonds, 17 sapphires, 11 emeralds, 269 pearls and four rubies.

It contains jewels including the Black Prince’s Ruby, Stuart Sapphire, and Cullinan II diamonds.

St Edward’s Sapphire, placed in the center of the top cross, is believed to have been worn in a ring by St Edward the Confessor and discovered in his tomb in 1163.

The tiara was created for the coronation of the Queen’s father, King George VI, in 1937.

The flowers

2. Flowers

Next to the crown is a wreath.

The flowers are white roses, white spray roses, white chrysanthemums, and foliage, including pine from the gardens at Balmoral and pittosporum, and lavender and rosemary from the gardens at Windsor.

3. Royal Standard

The coffin is covered with a Royal Standard, representing sovereignty and Great Britain.

The Royal Standard is flown while the Queen is at one of the royal palaces, in the Queen’s vehicle during official journeys and in aircraft (while on the ground).

On the flag, there are four duels – England (three lions pass) in the first and fourth quarters, Scotland (aggressive lions) in the second quarter and Ireland (harp) in the third quarter.

Wales is not represented in the Royal Standard, as its special position as a principality was recognized by the founding of the Prince of Wales long before the incorporation of regions for Scotland. and Ireland in Royal Arms.

In Scotland, a different version of the Royal Standard is used, with Scottish arms in the first and fourth quartiles and English arms in the second.

Catafalque is surrounded by four large yellow candles.

5. Wanamaker cross

Standing at the top of the coffin is the Wanamaker cross.

It is one of the four processional crosses of Westminster Abbey, and is made of ivory and gilded silver, and decorated with a series of gold and jade plates.

On one side, panels show the crucifixion with representations of the annunciation, nativity, resurrection, and ascension on the arm of the cross.

On the other side is Jesus Christ, with groups of apostles on the arms of the cross. Smaller panels show icons of missionaries and figures of angels.

6. Beefeaters

Among those who guard the coffin on constant 24-hour vigil are four Yeoman Warders, also known as the beekeepers.

They usually guard the Tower of London.
