A federal judge has set trial dates for remaining defendants implicated in Purebred in an alleged international doping conspiracy case that was successful. some convictions and some confessions.
The most prominent name among those indicted is banned trainer Jason Servis, whose case will be heard alongside New York-based veterinarian Alexander Chan on January 9, 2023. .
Servis accumulated a picky high win percentage over the decade of 2010 before being arrested for three felony drug mislabeling and conspiracy to commit fraud charges in March 2020.
According to a series of audio recordings the government had produced as evidence against him – plus implausible testimony from jailed bargaining defendants – Servis allegedly concocted nearly all all the horses under his control in early 2019, including MGISW Maximum security, who crossed the rope first in the GI Kentucky Derby, but was DQ’d for interference in the race. Chan is said to have supported the alleged conspiracy.
Another trial group, set for September 12, 2022, will decide charges against former trainer Michael Tannuzzo and Florida-based veterinarian Erica Garcia, both of whom are accused of being co-workers. The crime of former coach Jorge Navarro is now in prison.
Referring to previous failures that have complicated the court calendar, U.S. District Court Judge Mary Kay Vyskocil wrote in the May 6 scheduling sequence, “These are solid trial dates sure. The court will not accept the delay”.
Previous reasons for pushing back the trial included conflicts over defense attorneys’ schedules, delays related to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the large volume of evidence against the defendants that had been presented.
