Server DRAM is set to surpass Mobile DRAM this year
Market research company Trend force (opens in a new tab) shared its predictions for next year’s DRAM production, and it looks like servers could overtake the scale to become the most important area.
The company reckons that server DRAM will account for 37.6% of total bit output for 2023, second only to smartphones at 36.8%. While the difference may seem insignificant, the real significance lies in the tremendous growth in the server market.
The predictions take into account the previous year’s trends, and the predictions for the current year are based on a number of real-time factors, such as widespread availability and adoption of artificial intelligence.
DRAM production 2023
Normally, maybe 2023 is not the year when server DRAM overtakes mobile DRAM, and it is possible that this trend will be reversed next year. This is because 2022 sees a significant oversupply of mobile DRAM and companies are now catching up to try to burn off existing inventory.
However, predictions for both smartphone shipments and their average increase in DRAM content are still rather conservative, which could be a sign that companies are turning their attention elsewhere. in the context of global economic pressures.
The recent boom in AI technology and other high-performance computing applications has seen the need for server DRAM increase dramatically. TrendForce predicts that the average server DRAM content will grow 12.1% year-on-year in 2023, compared with 6.7% for smartphones.
Over the next two or so years, TrendForce expects the trend predicted this year to continue as servers continue to overtake smartphones, which is largely due to the growing popularity of AI that has recently demonstrated public appeal.
