Sergio Perez aims for home win as Mexico extends F1 race deal
MEXICO CITY —Mexican Sergio Perez says he is “super proud” that his country has secured the extension of the Formula 1 race to 2025 on Thursday and is identified as the first home winner .
Formula One and local promoter CIE previously announced a three-year deal keeping Mexico City’s Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez on the calendar.
Red Bull’s Perez has won the title twice this season and Sunday will be another opportunity to celebrate with home audiences after finishing third last year.
“I’ve dreamed about it a few times already (winning), and it’s going to be huge for me. Obviously, that’s the goal for Sunday,” he told reporters.
Teammate Max Verstappen, last year’s race winnergot trapped by him second driver title while Red Bull won their first constructors crown since 2013 in Texas last weekend.
Victory for Verstappen on Sunday will be a record 14th in a season for the Dutch driver.
The Grand Prix at the Autodromo of the capital Hermanos Rodriguez returned to the calendar in 2015 after a 23-year absence. The original five-year contract was renewed in 2019 through the end of the year.
This year’s event is expected to attract more than 350,000 spectators over three days.
“Every year the race attracts a huge number of passionate fans and the atmosphere is incredible,” said Formula One chief executive Stefano Domenicali. “I know people will be excited by this news.”
