A team of researchers with members from several organizations in Denmark, Sweden and Japan has developed a means to send 1.84 petabits of data per second over a fiber optic cable more than 7.9 km long. . Their report is published in Photonic nature.

As the applications used on the internet have grown, moving ever larger amounts of data has become an important issue. In this new effort, the researchers developed a single chip capable of processing nearly two petabits of data per second.

The chip that the researchers built and demonstrated is based on the use of photons, not electrons. To transfer large amounts of data quickly, they added technology to their chip that first splits the incoming data stream (from the laser) into 37 individual paths that pass through individual streams in a single stream. Fiber Optic. cable. But before sending, the data in each of the 37 streams is divided into 223 individual pieces of data, each corresponding to a unique part of the spectrum.

The researchers note that this allows the creation of a frequency comb, whereby data is transmitted in different colors over fiber optic cables. In addition to transferring large amounts of data quickly, it also prevents data streams from interfering with each other. The researchers then put their chip into an optical processing device, which they describe as the size of a matchbox — they describe the result as a system that “transmits multi-wavelength data and extremely parallel space”.

To test their device, the researchers connected it to another device that provided it with multiple channels of data. At the other end, they connect a fiber optic cable that spans nearly eight kilometers, where it meets another device that measures the amount and quality of data received. The researchers note that adding their new device to the internet will not require any new transmission medium – the standard optical cables currently in use are compatible.

New on-chip laser frequency comb is 100 times more efficient than previous versions
