Senator buys Travis Hamonic from Canucks
The Vancouver Canucks traded defender Travis Hamonic for the Ottawa Senators to be selected in the third round.
The Canucks seem to be trying to get rid of some of their bad deals, and they found a buyer in Ottawa for the Hamonic. The defensive player is currently in the first year of a two-year contract with a $3 million cap.
Hamonic is in his second season with the Canucks, signing them last season after impressing during his professional trial. He previously played for the New York Islanders, who got him into the second round in 2008, and the Calgary Flames.
Hamonic has three goals and seven points in 24 games this season, but he was more known as a dependable defensive back during his prime. That said, the 31-year-old has had better days, with 46.59% CF% and 44.53% xGF% in uniform strength this season.
He joins the good Senators beyond a playoff spot this season, but is looking for a veteran defender to add a little more consistency to next season, when the team has hopes of becoming more of a contender.
The third round pick is back to being a 2022 pick and a third round pick for the Canucks alone. They previously traded that pick in the 2020 season for the Vegas Golden Knights to Nate Schmidt, who then handed that pick to Ottawa along with Nick Holden to Evgenii Dadonov.
