If you’ve been paying attention to Sega over the past few years, then you probably know that it’s slowly closing down its giant Japan-based video game centers. Now, Sega has announced that it is leaving the video games business entirely, ending a 50-year era defined by claw machines, fighters and more.
This news comes from Destructoid, translation of a statement released by Sega this morning. In it, the company revealed that it intends to sell the remaining 14.9% stake it holds in its video games division to another company called Genda Inc., Destructoid reportedly the same company that Sega has sold its video game centers to for the past few years.
“Sega stores nationwide will be converting their store name to GiGO, to express our gratitude for Sega’s 56 years of history and our desire to be an oasis of solace. people’s real thirst for entertainment,” Genda President Hisashi Kataoka said regarding the news, according to Chronicles of video games. “We’ll start with Ikebukuro, Akihabara and Shinjuku. Then the whole country.”
The Sega branding on stand-alone video game centers will begin to be replaced by the GiGO Entertainment brand. While Sega will be leaving the job of owning and operating the video game centers, don’t expect to see the Sega video game consoles disappear. Destructoid reports that Sega still intends to manufacture video game consoles for worldwide distribution – you won’t see them inside a large building with a big Sega sign on it anymore.
