Sean Payton: Cowboys will beat the Bucs in Week 1

“I think Dallas’ defense has improved again. I think Dan (Quinn) did a great job. Those guys play the ball with great speed, they turn the tide,” Payton said. Quinn is the Cowboys defensive coordinator.

Payton’s Cowboys’ relationship deepened. He was the quarterback coach and assistant head coach under Pro Hall of Famer Bill Parcells in Dallas for two seasons before taking the Saints job in 2006.

Payton, who won the Super Bowl in New Orleans, is often associated with the Cowboys head coach position.

In July, a source close to Payton told the Miami Herald that the Cowboys are “one of the teams that would be interested in” Payton should he decide to return to the NFL as head coach. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones tried to quash that speculation.

“Sean Payton shouldn’t be out there as a topic of discussion. It was an injustice to him, the Cowboys, all of us,” Jones said, according to The Athletic’s Jon Machota. “Mike (McCarthy) had a chance here to win a Super Bowl.”

McCarthy is in the hot seat because he hasn’t won the playoffs with the Cowboys yet. Dallas’ early schedule was brutal. Alongside NFC powerhouse Tampa Bay, the Cowboys face AFC champion Cincinnati in Week 2 and Super Bowl champion Rams in Week 5.
