SEA Games 2023: Robin Catalan clinches PH’s second kun bokator gold
MANILA Philippines — ONE Championship fighter Robin Catalan defeated Indonesian Ade Permana to win the gold medal in the men’s 50 kg division at the 32nd Southeast Asian Games Kun Bokator on Monday at Chroy Changvar Convention Center in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
Catalan took home the country’s 17th gold medal and second in Kun Bokator – the traditional martial art in Cambodia – taking part Angel Gwen Derlawho dominates the sport’s women’s singles bamboo shield content.
The 32-year-old Catalan also defeated Cambodia’s Sovan Nang with a decisive score of 58-52, 18-13, 22-38 in the semi-finals.
Besides the veteran MMA fighter, the Philippines also has two bronze medals in the team / three-person content.
Derla, the winner of the women’s bamboo shield event, finished with a bronze medal in the women’s bare-knuckle event (Team/Triple) alongside her teammates Shara Jizmundo and Jess Dela Cruz.
Zandro Jizmundo, James Mayagma and Rick Ortega also won bronze in the men’s (Team/Trio) event.
Prior to that, Phillip Delarmino, Ryan Jakiri and Godwin Langbayan also won bronze medals in their respective events.
Delarmino finished third in the men’s 60kg fight after beating bookie Chet Chon 3-0 in the semi-finals.
Jakiri won bronze in the men’s 65kg semi-final after falling to Vietnam’s Huynh Van Cuong 3-1, while Langbayan also failed to reach the final in the men’s 70kg category after a 0-3 defeat at the hands of Ngo Duc of Vietnam.
