Scroll through the Pentiment, this beautiful medieval background features fully embroidered animations
Social media surfers may have caught a glimpse of the side-scroller Scarlet Deer Inn, which recently went viral over the weekend thanks to its fully embroidered animations. That’s right, embroidery is like using needle, thread, and fabric to put together every real-life animation, from the protagonist’s big jump to the wagging tail of a sheep. This stitch is then scanned into the game by Attu Games developers, creating a uniquely beautiful image. platformer with a little physical touch.
Scarlet Deer Inn follows mother-of-two Elise, who isn’t one to have a “heroic epic written about her”. Elise spends her days tending to the famous inn and runs around beautifully textured environments that the developers say are inspired by medieval Europe, Slavic folklore and the films of Studio Ghibli. Things take a turn for the worse when an “unexpected incident” forces her to explore underground caves full of giant monsters. Her only form of protection? A torch and some floating platform skills.
This short clip posted on the developer’s Twitter account shows the unique creative process, where physical embroidery is digitally processed with shadows and outlines, then scanned into the game’s airy scenes. Outside of that work, husband and wife duo Attu Games are doing almost everything else, from publishing and writing, to painting and programming. Even the windy soundtrack is performed by them using traditional instruments.
The mix of paint and embroidery compliments the very unique folk scene. It almost reminds me of how good it is penitentscribbling draft The artwork comes with its medieval setting, though the effect seems much more bizarre in this case.
ABOVE Twitter, one of the developers Eva Navratilova admits that “it could be easily done with some shading tools or simply draw with PS.” Why go through the effort of threading, scanning, and animating? “That’s the main reason we create games,” explains Navratilova, “to have fun trying different things.” Embroidery is a pretty relaxing pastime anyway, so why not make a game while you’re playing it? (Besides the headache of actually, you know, making a game.)
Attu Games previously released another game on Steam: the same hand-drawn medieval adventure feudal alloyAn action adventure in which you control a fish-controlled robot that swings a sword spontaneously.
Sadly, there’s no release window for Scarlet Deer Inn yet, but it will launch on PC and Switch when it’s ready. You can list it On steam right away.
