Scientists hedging bets with mixed COVID vaccine for Omicron and Wuhan variants | UK News

New generation vaccines with built-in coverage against the evolving COVID virus.

The stab made by Moderna – and Pfizer is not far behind its own version – still triggered an immune response against the original version of the Wuhan virus. But it also adds protection against the Omicron family of variants that have become too dominant this year.

The so-called dual-targeted – or dual-targeted vaccines – was the first to be approved by the UK health regulator.

Clinical trials have shown it to be safe and produce a much higher antibody response to Omicron.

The vaccine currently available is less effective against the variant – it still protects well from death and hospitalization, but doesn’t prevent people from becoming infected, especially several months after the shot.

Omicron is likely to remain dominant this fall and winter, so it makes sense to update the jab to try and reduce infection levels in the population.

But why continue adding genetic material from the original 2020 virus if it’s mostly gone?

That’s because health authorities are hedging their bets.

The pandemic has shown us that viruses are unpredictable. A new variant that is more similar to the Wuhan strain may be blue. And the original virus caused more deaths.

Combined protection against multiple viruses is a tried and tested approach that has been used in influenza vaccines.

The drug contains elements from three or, often four different strains of flu with the hope that it will protect people in the coming months.

New Moderna’s COVID jab still needs approval from the Joint Committee on Immunization and Immunization. Experts on the Commission will decide whether the vaccine should replace the current Moderna booster.

Everyone over the age of 50, younger people with certain medical conditions, and health and care workers will need additional vaccinations this fall.

Looks like they’ll get the update shot.

Moderna has agreed to deliver the dual-value vaccine to EU countries this winter, if they receive the approval of European health regulators.

JCVI is not always a good fit for its EU counterpart so it may choose to stick with the current vaccine.

Is this the only adjustment to the vaccine?

You won’t bet on it.

UK approves new COVID vaccine

Updated Jab protects against a wide range of mutations in the virus. But COVID will continue to evolve and happen to be able to create something new that surpasses our immune systems.

Then it returns to the drawing board.
