Eve parasite
Square Enix put out a lot of experimental games in the 32-bit era. Eve parasite uses elements from Japanese horror novels but tells its own original story. It introduces us to Eve, a terrifying monster with the ability to cause people to spontaneously combust. Set in New York and using a variation of Square Enix’s turn-based combat system, Eve parasite stands out compared to other companies in the same industry in many aspects. It offers the right mix of Japanese horror and JRPG traditions, creating one of the scariest JRPGs yet.
Koudelka
The predecessor of excellence Heart of darkness games on PlayStation 2, Koudelka is a pretty unique game. Its art style is much creepier than the sequels and the overall atmosphere is darker. Set just before the beginning of the 20th century, Koudelka follows the main character as she explores a monastery full of monsters. There isn’t much else out there like this Koudelkaeven Heart of darkness the game feels less cruel to them.
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey
Actually, any word game Shin Megami Tensei The series or its many spin-offs have a good chance of becoming one of the scariest JRPGs. Maybe not Jack Bros.But you know what I mean. Strange journeyThe atmosphere is extremely claustrophobic and the inspiration is clearly from that Place it right on top. You’re no less powerful here than in any Atlus JRPG, but there’s something about this game that makes you feel incredibly scared. Maybe it’s the eerie background music or the stuffy hallways. Perhaps it’s the risk of being wiped out at any time. Regardless, this is probably one of the scariest JRPGs you can find.
Laplace no Ma
Originally released on Japanese computers, Laplace no Ma is part of the horror-themed JRPG series. The Super Famicom version has a fan translation and is probably the best version to check out for non-Japanese speakers. Set in a fictional Massachusetts town called Newcam, Laplace no Ma draws heavily on Lovecraftian lore. You get to explore a creepy mansion, but you can leave and use the town’s facilities when needed. It has some rough edges, but it’s worth checking out if you’re looking for something creepy to play.
Sweet home
Inspiration for Resident devil series may be just a simple Famicom game, but it still has the ability to send chills down your spine. Sweet home is something of a chimera, blending survival, adventure, and JRPG elements into a package that stands out on its platform. Almost all resources are limited, and if you don’t use them carefully, you won’t be able to escape the mansion alive. One of the scariest JRPGs? If not, it’s clearly the one important Scary JRPG.
