Saumarez Smith’s term extended as President of BHA


The term of British Equestrian Authority Chairman Joe Saumarez Smith will be extended until May 31, 2025, the BHA announced on Tuesday. This news follows a recommendation to extend his term by the BHA’s Nominations Committee, which has the unanimous support of the BHA Board. Saumarez Smith will hold this role for a full three-year term, beginning June 1, 2022. His initial term will expire in November 2023. As part of this process, Members Members of the BHA approved an amendment to the BHA Terms, to allow an extended period to be provided.

Joe Saumarez Smith said: “I am very pleased and honored to be asked by shareholders to extend my term of office. I look forward to working with all race stakeholders on the many issues facing the industry, particularly in relation to our long-term strategic direction. I am sure that together we can achieve many positive results.”

Julie Harrington, CEO of the BHA, said: “I am delighted that Joe’s term as Chairman has been extended. Together we have made great progress in addressing the sport’s governing structure and have begun to execute on the industry’s strategy. Now is the time to settle in as we look to develop and execute a strategy, building on the advantages of the new governance structure to bring about radical change to the sport.”
