Samsung’s premium 980 Pro PCIe 4.0 SSD has dropped in price on Amazon UK and is now £91.82 for the 1TB model with the heatsink pre-installed instead of the usual £125+. This is a great price for one of these Fastest SSD on the marketwith the advent of even faster (but significantly more expensive) 990 Pro pushes the previous flagship down to almost bargain price.
We reviewed the 980 Pro back in 2020, when it was one of the first ‘second-generation’ PCIe 4.0 SSDs to break through the 5000 MB/s barrier, ending up with sequential reads up to 7000 MB/s, writes up to 5000 MB/s and top random performance with up to 1000K (aka 1M) read/write IOPS – this is the best of the best. That resulted in some great IRL performance, fast load times etc, but still a recommendation constrained by its high price – £208 for a 1TB model without a heatsink at the time! To get a high-end version of the drive for less than half the price is real progress, and with more PCIe 4.0-enabled systems available, it’s time for the 980 Pro to go mainstream.
Note that the 980 Pro has recently hit the headlines for the wrong reasons, with some 2TB models experiencing issues where the drive suddenly goes read-only, rendering them unusable. can be recovered as an operating system drive (although recoverable via cloning). This can be prevented by upgrading the firmware to the new version 5B2QGXA7, so you should do this even on the 1TB size of an unaffected drive. This doesn’t affect my recommendation, but is something to keep in mind!
Similarly, while this is purely a PC site, it should be emphasized that this drive can also be included in the PS5, thanks to that impressive speed and the built-in heatsink.
I think that’s all the details mentioned – so consider this drive if you’re looking for a speedy 1TB model with a heatsink at a great price, but don’t forget to update the program. facility to ensure safety!
