Samsung says it shipped nearly 10 million foldable phones by 2021

Just a few short weeks before the next day Decompression eventSamsung has disclosure that it has shipped “nearly 10 million foldable smartphones” worldwide. In a post on Samsung Newsroom, the company’s Head of Mobile Experiences (MX) Business, Dr TM Roh, said a 300% increase over 2020 and he expects what he calls “speed rapid growth” will continue. Most of its foldable customers, 70% of them apparently, chose the clamshell-like Flip. That’s not surprising at least: Samsung has previously admitted that Flip 3 motivate more people to switch brands compared to what its flagships did.

However, the number of 10 million units that Roh claims that Samsung shipped last year is significantly larger than the number that IDC announced previously. In one report by the International Data Corporation in February, it said it “saw worldwide shipments of foldable phones, including flip and display styles, totaling 7.1 million units by 2021”. Whichever number is correct, Samsung’s MX division posted increased revenue last year, mainly due to strong sales of its latest foldable and Galaxy S devices. .

In addition to giving an update on how Samsung’s devices are performing, Roh has also confirmed that the company will showcase its next Flip and Fold models at its next Unpacked event. He also said Samsung has made improvements to enhance the user experience with the upcoming devices:

“I’m excited to see people discover new ways to do more of the things they love with new foldable displays…. At our upcoming Unpacked on August 10, you’ll see that the impact of our innovation isn’t just about what technology can do, it’s about what you can do. We once again draw inspiration from the most important source – Galaxy users – to push the limits of what’s possible. I can’t wait to show you the potential of our new Samsung Galaxy foldable as the ultimate tool for both productivity and self-expression.”

Samsung’s upcoming Unpacked event will take place on August 10 at 9 a.m. ET. Join us at our Youtube Channel to monitor our coverage, starting around 8:40am.
