Samsung Introduces 360 Degree Foldable Display Prototype ‘Flex in and Out’: Report

Samsung Display is said to have developed a screen that rotates 360 degrees. According to a report, the foldable display prototype, first introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2023, can fold in both directions for a full 360-degree range. Samsung Display (a Samsung subsidiary that makes displays) calls this a “Flex in and out” display, and while it’s not a new form factor when it comes to foldable devices, it does. it certainly has some interesting use cases. Samsung showed off several display prototypes at CES 2023, including a new Flex Hybrid display that folds and slides simultaneously.

According to a report During The Verge, Samsung recently showed off this prototype display at CES 2023. The “Flex in and out” screen, as the name implies, can be folded both inward and outward. This means that the screen can unfold like a newspaper, or fold out and wrap around the device, like the hardcover of a book.

The report claims that the display also uses a waterdrop hinge design, making the inward and outward folding mechanism possible. This new hinge, which holds the screen in a teardrop shape when folded inward, is quite different from the current hinge used in SAMSUNGGalaxy Fold’s upcoming models. The brand claims that the new hinge design, in addition to leaving the crease less visible, will also help reduce stress on the foldable display, which should theoretically increase long-term reliability.

The “Flex in and out” display also appears to be attached to a functional device that has a software interface and looks similar to existing Galaxy Fold models. So it’s likely that Samsung will bring it to the upcoming Galaxy Fold model, which has traditionally been announced in August of this year. The Verge mentions that Samsung introduced a similar display, but with more folds in and out at an earlier event held in South Korea.

The fold-in and fold-out dual screen functionality mainly reduces the need for a second external display, which is normally used when the device is folded. This is possible, as the internal display can double as the outer screen when folded out, where the device can be placed on one side on a surface, such as a table. While this design was tested before, it was dropped mainly because the foldable screen was not durable to contact at the time. If Samsung continues with this new hinge and foldable screen for its next Fold model, it will reduce the need to equip an external secondary screen, unless Samsung wants users to keep the folding screen inward. and protected by two outer shells when in use. bag or in stock.
