Samsung is releasing a new voice transcription feature that people with Galaxy smartphones can use to create an AI-generated version of their voice to answer calls.

The feature is coming to the smartphone assistant Bixby as an AI enhancement to the “text call” feature, allowing users to enter answers when they can’t use voice to answer calls. This response is converted to audio by Bixby and then answered to the caller. But instead of using Bixby voice, Bixby’s “Custom Voice Generator” option allows users to record sentences using their own voice. Instead, Bixby will create an AI-generated copy of the user’s voice and tone of the message.

Samsung explains: “Using the new Bixby Custom Voice Generator, users can record different sentences for Bixby to analyze and create a copy of the AI-generated voice and tone.

Samsung is currently rolling out Bixby text calls to English-speaking markets, while the custom voice generator is currently only available in Korean.

Currently, voice transcription is limited to calls on the Samsung Phone app, but Samsung plans to make the feature available to other Samsung apps.

Bixby text calls are available on Galaxy S23, S23+, S23 Ultra, Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4, with One UI 5.1 or later for English. Voice generation works on Galaxy S23, S23+ and S23 Ultra.

AI-generated voices are an area of growing interest from big tech companies. Amazon recently decided to show off Alexa’s voice-generating capabilities, somewhat awkwardly, by It proves that he is reading a children’s story in the voice of the child’s deceased grandmother. “While AI can’t remove that pain of loss, it can certainly make their memories last long,” said an Amazon executive.

There are concerns about the way AI-generated voice technology can be used to create deepfakes for campaigns that provide false information or voice scams. The FBI warned last year that it had seen an uptick in the use of fraudulent job applicants. using voice deepfakes in online interviews.

It seems that OpenAI’s decision to go public with ChatGPT has opened the door for others to release general AI features or products, most notably Microsoft through Bing Chat and Google in the future. Google Bard, plus APIs each company is providing to third party developers.

I tried Resemble.AI’s GPT-3 based speech synthesis generator. It requested a 30-second recording sample of me repeating the site’s terms of use for my voice recording. The sample was uploaded to its server and compiled within about a minute. I then type a brief sentence that plays back with a copy of my voice that is clearly and logically pronounced, but spoken with a strong North American accent, very different from my soft Australian accent.

Separately, Samsung also marked upcoming improvements to AI-based voice dictation after integrating AI on its devices with Samsung apps. This initiative looks like Samsung is working on a solution to Google’s voice dictation feature only available on Pixel 6 and 7 devices using the Google Assistant.
