Sam Smith and Kim Petras makes LGBTQ history on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart : NPR

Sam Smith and Kim Petras became the first openly non-binary soloist and the first openly transgender soloist to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 song chart, respectively.
Their song “Unholy” debut was in 3rd place on October 8th and spent two weeks in 2nd place before that overcome Steve Lacy’s “Bad Habit” on Monday. The song that brought both their artists 1st place on the Hot 100, with Smith’s “Stay with Me” reaching #2 in 2014.
“I really don’t want to be the last,” said Petras Billboards Last week about her then-No. 2 spots on the Hot 100. “There are always amazing and talented transgender artists.”
She pointed at the transgender artist SOPHIEwho helped usher in a new era of electronic pop, and others like Amanda Lear and Ayesha Erotica, who she admires.
“It’s the same story over and over again for transgender girls who make special music and get pushed under the rug while someone else takes credit for them,” she said. “I’m so glad Sam gave me the chance to shine here. I hope I can help break the cycle – it feels like everyone is finally ready for us to succeed and that fills me with overflow. full of joy.”
“Unholy” is by German artist first item on the Hot 100. Petras was also visit with Camila Cabello, Charli XCX and Rita Ora.
Smith had six other hits top 10 on the Hot 100, including “Too Good at Goodbyes”, “I’m Not the Only One” and “Dancing with a Stranger” with Normani.
The songs on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart are determined based on a mixture of data including streaming, sales, and radio broadcasting.
