Salman Rushdie: World reacts as controversial author stabbed in New York state | World News


The stabbing of controversial author Sir Salman Rushdie has been described as “an attack on freedom of thought and expression”.

75 years old still on a ventilator after being rushed to the hospital and undergoing hours of surgery following the attack in New York state.

And messages of support have poured in on the British-Indian author.

Novelist Ian McEwan said: “This horrific attack on my dear friend Salman is an attack on freedom of thought and expression.

“These are the freedoms that underlie all of our rights and freedoms. Salman has been an inspirational defender of persecuted writers and journalists around the world.”

Norwegian William Nygaard, who was shot and seriously injured in 1993 after the publication of Sir Salman’s work, said: “He is a leading author of great significance to literature, and he is. found a good life in the United States.”

Home Secretary Priti Patel tweeted: “Shocked and appalled to hear of the senseless and unprovoked attack on Sir Salman Rushdie.

“Freedom of speech is a value we hold dear and efforts to undermine it are not tolerated. My thoughts are with Sir Salman and his family.”

Boris Johnson said: “Horrible that Sir Salman Rushdie was stabbed in the exercise of a right that we should never stop defending.

“We all hope he’s okay.”

Comedian and author David Baddiel tweeted: “Horrible what happened to Salman Rushdie. Horrible that there are people who would think he took it upon himself or somehow deserved it. with it.”

US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said: “Today, the country and the world witnessed a reprehensible attack on writer Salman Rushdie. This act of violence is appalling.

“All of us in the Biden-Harris Administration are praying for his speedy recovery. We thank the good citizens and first responders who helped Mr. Rushdie so quickly after the attack. and law enforcement because quick and efficient work is underway.”

And Suzanne Nossel, of the free speech group Pen America, said: “While we don’t know the source or motive of this attack, everyone around the world has experienced violent language. similar force or appeal could be seen as legitimizing this attack. a writer while he is engaged in his essential job of connecting with readers.”
