Sales of almost every BMW are down, except electric cars

It’s a tough time being a regular car maker. While luxury brands like Lamborghini is boasting record sales, the kind of automaker you and I can shop for is struggling with production backlogs, delays, and parts shortages. All of these issues are affecting the sales and profits of automakers around the world. Hurry, let me get my little violin.

For BMW, its latest financial results show that such barriers have hampered sales of almost every model in its lineup. In the first six months of 2022, BMW reports a drop in deliveries 13.7%, down 1,016,228 vehicles.

The drop was especially bad for the company’s smaller models, like the 3 and . 4 Linesdown 34.3% and X1 and X2 crossovers, down 24.1% at the start of the year.

In fact, BMW reported reduced deliveries for every model in its range except X7 SUV and its electrified product line. Yes, sales of the X7 increased by 3.5% while deliveries of battery-powered BMWs more than doubled to 57,462.

Sales of BMWs core range of i vehicles, including the iX electric SUV, i3 hatchback and i8 sport rose 102.4 percent to 26,037 in the first six months of the year. Across car manufacturers entire line of electric cars, sales have increased by more than 150%.

BMW car says this growth worldwide is partly driven by the launch of iX. In the US, BMW offers the iX SUV and i4 . electric sedanwith i7 coming later this year.

The company also provides plug-in hybrid variants of several models, including the 3 Series, 5 Series and X5 SUVs. However, sales of its plug-in models decreased slightly compared to the same period last year.

Across the other BMW group brands, electric vehicles and plug-in options are also proving popular.

At Mini, total deliveries fell by a fifth, although sales of the all-electric Mini Cooper SE rose 37%. In total, electric vehicles account for more than 18 percent of total global deliveries for Mini.
