‘Saints Row’ devs promise the reboot will still be fun

It was last August Saints Row Developer Volition . The new title aims to deviate from the series’ trademark absurdity and one-sidedness. Now, the team wanted to make that clear just because basedoesn’t mean it won’t fun. Saints Row didn’t suddenly become a head-to-head exploration of organized crime, and it’s still as cartoonish as you might expect, it’s just a little more grounded in its animation.

Last year, Creative Director Jim Boone and Chief Designer Jeremy Bernstein said that the Saints Row series had burned out on the storytelling runway. After all, once your character has conquered Earth, descended to Hell, and fought a classic duel with the Devil, street crime will feel like a big comedy. “I’m trying to make that clear!” Creative Director Brian Traficante said: “I believe you maybe continue that runway […] but we didn’t want arrive.”

“In terms of going back to the grounding tone, it took some time, as the team sought to analyze and define ‘what is’,” says Traficante. Saints Row? The formula that defines that series seems to focus on engaging fun gameplay, goofy jokes, cartoon violence, and a generous amount of reference jokes. “Sometimes it’s a joke for the sake of a gag, but there’s a need to consciously make sure that’s exactly what we want to do and that it’s the right time to do it.” I said. The focus is on making sure that there are plenty of light moments to balance out the timing in the story when things go go at night.

Screenwriter Jennifer Campbell said that the team followed “the rule of making sure you’re punching up, not punching down”. Campbell added that “we’re exploring a more diverse set of characters, so it gives us more avenues to explore anyway.” Traficante says that the developers have created “internal mechanics” to help ensure that a large group of people can consider some of the more confusing gameplay in the game. He added that the group wanted to create jokes that would allow “everyone [to] be part of the joke. “

Saints Row’s use of parody reaches a fairly high level in the fourth game, where it runs a series of relationship simulation sequences in such a way that Block effect. (Except, of course, that the camera doesn’t cut away quickly when the two characters decide to spend some alone time together.)” In the new title, so players will need to hunt for nods.

And players will spend a lot of time being encouraged to hunt around the world of Santo Ileso in pursuit of storytelling, gameplay, and entertainment. The team combined the city with random detection devices, like a security fan loaded with cash, for you to find as you walk around. Traficante says it took testers about a week, playing full-time, to work their way through much of the title, which is vast and growing.

In addition to the breadth of the city, Volition also wanted to emphasize the depth of features such as character customization. Users can expect a degree of refinement that appears to exceed that offered in, for example, Cyberpunk 2077. You’ll be able to customize your appearance, voice, and clothing, as well as the looks of your cars and weapons. And none of these will be pay-to-use, instead, things will unlock deeper into the game as you progress.

Interestingly, the new title has a small less narrative freedom than some of its predecessors as a consequence of this richer, deeper world. This is to help imbue the game with a greater purpose and meaning, reinforcing the story, says Jennifer Campbell. “We really focus on keeping a chain of cause and effect, because you’re doing things reply for something,” she said. “You are shooting at everything because you did something earlier in the mission to get a reaction from the enemy side,” she added, with the aim of giving “the reason behind the things we love.” ask players to do”. Players will feel that “their actions are affecting the state of the game.”

Having watched about 45 minutes of gameplay footage now, I can say that the new title focuses on a narrower definition of silly. You can melee opponents, stick a grenade down their throats and then throw their bodies at a group of enemies to blow them up. Or you can ask a co-op friend to pick up your car with the helicopter’s electromagnet and drop you off at a mission location. There are piñata guns and soccer balls that stick to people tossing them into the air, as well as a new kit mechanic that lets you bouncing away from pedestrians for more flight time.

Undoubtedly, the arrival of this Saints Row game looks like it will be more of an event than before. The long-term success of GTA OnlineThe genre’s ever-present crime simulation sandbox has sucked so much air out of the genre that having a new alternative would be a big deal: We didn’t have a game.” real GTA” since 2016 Watch Dogs 2. One risk is Saints Row looking to perfect a game that users have now switched to.
