Saint Peter’s makes history as first 15 seed to hit Elite Eight

Saint Peter’s made history in the NCAA Tournament.

The Peacocks on Friday stunned Purdue with a 67-64 scoreline in their Eastern Zone semifinals. They are currently the first 15 seeds to ever advance to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.

Before that, a pair of 15 seeds produced a Sweet 16 but both lost. The original 15 seeds for promotion, the Florida Gulf Coast (aka “Dunk City”) lost to Florida in 2013. Oral Roberts, 15 seeds lost to Arkansas in the 2021 NCAA Tournament.

Saint Peter’s is the weaker seeded team to go the farthest in the tournament.

Their match against the Bolivarian team was over. The contest was a possession game for the most part and really wasn’t more than four points apart in either direction.

The last-minute difference came with Saint Peter’s clutch strike at the free-throw line. The Peacocks took a 19/21 lead and overcame their 11/11 free throws in the 4:02 final.

Purdue didn’t realize how well Saint Peter’s played and kept fouling them, which cost them.

Saint Peter’s went on Nov. 19 during the regular season. They are now 22-11 following NCAA Tournament wins over Kentucky, Murray State and Purdue.
