Sadiq Khan pushed himself into the Partygate line and demanded a ‘detailed explanation’ from the Met Police

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan today caused a backlash when he demanded The Metropolitan Police provided a ‘detailed explanation’ of their Partygate decisions.

The Labor politician has brought himself into controversy over the Covid lockdown breaches in Downing Street by writing to the Met Police boss Sir Stephen House.

Mr Khan asked the force’s Interim Commissioner to explain ‘factors that were taken into account by Scotland Yard officers’ when deciding whether to take action over the No 10 coronavirus rule breach.

His actions infuriated Tory and furiously accused the mayor of political interference in police operations.

Mr Khan’s intervention comes after the release of pictures yesterday showing Boris Johnson drinking with others in Downing Street in November 2020 – a time when indoor social gatherings are banned .

The prime minister was not punished for the assault, which is said to have been left to his outgoing communications director Lee Cain.

This is despite the Met Police having confirmed the event was among the Partygate gatherings for which fines were issued.

Scotland Yard declined to say how many fines were issued for the event or who received them.

The release of the photos has raised questions about how Mr Johnson – who is pictured here seemingly congratulating Mr Cain – escaped without a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) in November 13 party

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has been urged to open an investigation into why the Prime Minister was not fined for his attendance.

Mr Khan wrote to Sir Stephen as he stepped up his request from the Met Police to provide ‘clarity’ about their decision-making.

A spokesman for the mayor of London said: ‘Sadiq has today written to the Met Rights Commissioner seeking a detailed explanation of the factors that were taken into account by coroners when making a decision on taking action in individual cases in the Downing Street ‘Partygate’ Inquiry.

‘He has asked them to take steps to reassure Londoners by giving this explanation to them directly, as he is concerned that Londoners’ trust and confidence in the police is being undermined. further eroded by this lack of clarity.

‘The Mayor has made it clear that he cannot and will not interfere in operational decisions, however as the investigation is now complete he has made this request under regulation 23(g) of the Policy Protocol Order 2011.’

Senior Conservative MP David Jones, a former minister, told MailOnline: ‘This is an operational issue and he has no role in such matters.

‘Why the police make decisions is a matter for the Commissioner, not a politician’s.’
