In a speech marking Russia’s Victory Day on Monday, President Vladimir Putin sought to link his country’s struggle against Nazi Germany in World War Two to his invasion of Ukraine and declared unfounded that the West did not give him a choice.

Mr. Putin said that intervention in Ukraine was necessary because the West was creating “threats beside our borders” and “preparing for an invasion of our land.”

He also said that the West does not want to hear Russia’s proposals for dialogue.

“NATO countries don’t want to listen to us,” Putin said, adding that it meant “they have very different plans and we can see that.”

“Russia preempted the aggression – it was a coercive and sovereign decision,” he said.

Putin told the military that “today you are defending what your grandfathers and great-grandfathers fought for”.
