A UN panel of experts says its investigation has found evidence that war crimes were committed during Russia’s war in Ukraine, including cases of rape and torture of children. em.

Erik Møse, Chairman of the Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine, told the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva: “In the cases we investigated, the ages of victims of sexual violence and gender ranged from 4 to 82 years old. “The Commission has documented cases of children being raped, tortured and unlawfully detained. Children have also been killed and injured in indiscriminate attacks with explosive weapons.”

The panel said it had identified two cases of mistreatment of Russian soldiers while detained in Ukraine.

Three human rights experts from the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine traveled to Kyiv, Chernihiv, Kharkiv and Sumy, visiting 27 towns and interviewing more than 150 people.

Speaking at the United Nations Security Council on Thursday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov dismissed the “increased activity of international justice”, calling it “certainly hard work.”

The commission said “several soldiers of the Russian Federation” were held responsible for sexual and gender-based violence.

“These acts cover a wide variety of rights violations, including sexual violence, torture, and cruel and inhuman treatment. There are examples of relatives being forced to witness crimes,” it added.

Møse also noted that some of the attacks by the investigation “were carried out without distinction between civilians and combatants, including cluster munitions attacks and air raids on densely populated areas. residential.”

Committee members “were affected by the large number of executions in the areas we visited,” Møse added.

“Common elements of such crimes include previous incarceration of the victim as well as visible signs of execution on the body, such as hands tied behind the back, gunshot wounds. to the head and slit his throat,” he reported. “Several victims reported that after being initially detained by Russian forces in Ukraine, they were transferred to the Russian Federation and held for weeks in prison. Interlocutors described beatings, electric shocks, and forced nudity, as well as other types of violations in such detention facilities”.
