Russia heavy shelling in the east; Ukraine attacks important bridge

Russian troops attacked residential areas across Ukraine overnight, asserting interests, as Ukrainian forces launched a counterattack to try to retake the occupied southern region, attacking the bridge last operation across a river in the Russian-occupied Kherson region, Ukrainian authorities said on Saturday.

According to the mayor, a Russian missile attack on the city of Kramatorsk killed three people and wounded 13 others on Friday night. Kramatorsk is the headquarters of Ukrainian forces in the war-torn east of the country.

The attack comes less than a day after 11 other rockets were fired at the city, one of the two main ones held by Ukraine in Donetsk province, the focus of Russia’s ongoing offensive to capture the Donbas region. , eastern Ukraine.

Russia’s Defense Ministry on Saturday announced its forces had taken control of Pisky, a village on the outskirts of Donetsk, the capital of the province that pro-Moscow separatists have claimed since 2014.

Russian troops and Kremlin-backed rebels are trying to capture Ukrainian-held areas north and west of the city of Donetsk to expand the separatists’ self-proclaimed republic. But the Ukrainian military on Saturday said its forces prevented an overnight advance to the smaller cities of Avdiivka and Bakhmut.

Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov also claimed that Russian air strikes near Kramatorsk, 120 kilometers (75 miles) north of the city of Donetsk, destroyed a US-supplied missile launcher and ammunition grant. Ukrainian authorities did not acknowledge any military losses but said that Friday’s Russian missile attacks on Kramatorsk destroyed 20 residential buildings.

None of these claims can be independently verified.

The Ukrainian governor of neighboring Luhansk province, part of the war for the Donbas region and overrun by Russian troops last month, claims that the Ukrainian military still holds a small area. Writing on Telegram, Luhansk Governor Serhii Haidai said defenders were still hiding inside an oil refinery on the edge of Lysychansk, the city Moscow claims to have captured, while also controlling areas near a village. .

“The enemy is burning the ground at the entrances to the Luhansk region because it can’t pass (Ukrainian resistance along) these few kilometers,” Haidai said. “It is very difficult to count how many thousand shells this territory of the Free Luhansk region has endured over the past month and a half.”

Further west, the governor of the Dnipropetrovsk region added more Russian shelling on the city of Nikopol, located across the Dnieper River from Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.

Governor Yevhen Yevtushenko did not specify whether Russian troops fired at Nikopol from the occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. Writing on Telegram on Saturday, he said there were no casualties but residential buildings, a power line and a gas pipeline were damaged.

Nikopol has experienced daily shelling for most of the past week, and a barrage of shells killed three people and damaged 40 apartment buildings on Thursday, he said.

Russian and Ukrainian officials have for days accused each other of shelling the Zaporizhzhia plant in violation of nuclear safety rules. The Russian military has occupied the plant since the early days of Moscow’s invasion, although the plant’s pre-war Ukrainian nuclear workers continue to run it.

Ukrainian military intelligence on Saturday alleged that Russian troops shelled the plant from a village just a few kilometers away, damaging a factory pumping station and a fire station. Intelligence agencies say the Russians brought people into the power station and flagged Ukraine on a self-propelled howitzer on the outskirts of Enerhodar, the city where the plant is located.

“Clearly, it will be used for another provocation to charge the armed forces of Ukraine,” the directorate said without elaborating.

Ukrainian officials have repeatedly alleged that Russian forces have cunningly used the plant as a shield while firing on communities across the river, knowing that Ukrainian forces are incapable of firing. for fear of causing a nuclear accident.

They said Russian shelling on Friday night killed a woman and wounded two other civilians in the city of Zaporizhzhia, 122 kilometers (76 miles) from the plant. The Mykolayiv region of southern Ukraine also said a woman died there in the shelling.

For several weeks, the Ukrainian military has been trying to create the basis for a counter-offensive to retake the Russian-occupied Kherson region in southern Ukraine. A local Ukrainian official announced on Saturday that a Ukrainian attack damaged the last operational bridge over the Dnieper River in the region and further crippled Russian supply lines.

Serhii Khlan, deputy regional council of Kherson, wrote on Facebook: “The Russians are no longer able to fully transfer their equipment. His claims could not be immediately verified.

To the north, five civilians were injured overnight when Russia launched missiles at the Kharkiv border area, home to Ukraine’s second-largest city.

The governor of neighboring Sumy said 200 rockets were fired at his area from Russian territory in the past 24 hours. Sumy Governor Dmytro Zhyvytsky reported widespread crop failure due to burning wheat fields, but he did not mention any casualties.
