Moscow:

Russian authorities today promised to correct errors in their troop call to Ukraine, after some public outrage over students, elderly or sick people being ordered to report to the army.

When Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the partial deployment on Wednesday, he said only those with “appropriate” skills or military experience would be interested.

But many expressed outrage after witnessing – sometimes absurdly – cases where authorities summoned unfit people to serve.

Authorities in the Volgograd region, southwestern Russia, sent a 63-year-old diabetic ex-soldier to a training camp, despite poor health and brain problems.

According to Russian state agency RIA Novosti, the 63-year-old returned home on Friday night.

Also in this region, the 58-year-old director of the school Alexander Faltin received a call to join the army despite having no military experience.

His daughter posted a video on social media.

He was allowed to go home after his documents were reviewed, according to RIA.

A rare admission

Senate speaker Valentina Matviyenko urged all governors – who oversee campaigns – to avoid mistakes, in a rare election today.

“Incorrect mobilization cases … are causing harsh reactions in society, and rightfully so,” Matviyenko said in a statement on Telegram.

“Some people are arguing that it’s more important to quickly hand over their report (to superiors) than to correctly complete this important task,” she added.

“This is unacceptable… Make sure the partial mobilization is done in full and completely according to the criteria. And not a single mistake!” she ordered.

The governor of the northwestern region of Leningrad, Alexander Drozdenko told local regional chiefs “to consider the residents’ appeals under your personal control and deal with each case individually”, according to a report. announced on his administration’s website on Sunday.

Regional Governor Vladimir Avdeev said on Saturday that “anyone who is mistakenly mobilized will return home.”

Errors are plotted as isolated cases.

But the fact that the Russian authorities are talking about them points to concern about the level of anger coming from some citizens.

‘Understood confidence’

This new example is the latest Russian logistical problem revealed since the start of the Ukraine offensive in February.

On Saturday, Russia announced the replacement of the most senior general in charge of logistics in the context of this deployment.

On Saturday, Valeriy Fadeev, chairman of the Kremlin’s human rights council, urged Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu to “urgently solve the problems” to avoid “eroding people’s trust.”

He mentioned a number of unusual circumstances including the recruitment of 70 fathers of large families in the far east of Buryatia, and nurses and midwives without any military skills.

Fadeev said these recruits were called up “under threat of criminal prosecution.”

Mr. Fadeev also criticized those who “gave the summons at 2 a.m. as if they all thought we were draft dodgers.”

Several students told AFP they had been granted admissions, despite Russian authorities promising that they would be excluded from recruitment.

On Saturday, President Putin signed a decree confirming that students in institutions of intermediate and higher education will be exempt from assignment.

Detained anti-advocacy protesters said police had given them summons to being detained – ordering them to enlist in the effort they are denouncing.

But the Kremlin defended the procedure on Thursday, saying “it doesn’t break the law”.
