Rules 2022 Genesis GV70 3.5 AWD, Seriously

Bask in the glory of perhaps the best luxury crossover on the market right now.

These days, luxury crossovers tend to be expensive. Each automaker seems to offer one, with varying degrees of success. Although the format is more or less established, there is one luxury crossover that deserves even more attention. It’s the Genesis GV70 2022 and basically like every Genesis product, it punches beyond its weight class.

GV70 is the second SUV model in the following Genesis lineup Medium-sized GV80 (with rules too, tbh)Like its big brother, the GV70 offers completely unique styling, great materials, great build quality, and a great powertrain for less money than you might think.

That great powertrain, in the case of my test car, is the excellent 3.5-liter SmartStream twin-turbo V6 found in a host of other Kia/Hyundai/Genesis models. It’s a small engine, producing 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. It is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive. There’s a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder available for $12,500 less than the V6 with a 75-horsepower deficit, so it’s well worth considering.

The twin-turbo 3.5-liter SmartStream V6 is a popular engine among the Kia/Hyundai/Genesis populations, but that’s okay because it’s excellent.

That powertrain, combined with a well-controlled chassis, makes the GV70 comfortable and quiet to drive around town and surprisingly good on twisty, winding roads. There’s always plenty of power and torque to the touch, the overall grip is high, and the chassis is misaligned on the underside, so you’re unlikely to crash yourself into a tree if you overtake. over a corner. The GV70’s steering is electrically assisted, so while there’s not much feedback it’s accurate enough and this is a crossover, so who cares?

As a luxury crossover, you can expect the GV70’s interior to be a great place to sit. In the words of The late, great Robert Evans, “You bet it’s right.” Seriously, when I talk about Genesis punching above its weight class, this is the one I’m talking about. All materials feel high quality. Metal is used more on the critical contact points, instead of plastic; The leather feels soft yet durable, and all screens are crisp and vibrant. It’s a great cabin. No beef here.

From an ergonomic point of view, the GV70 also excels. I am scientifically described as “Big Guy,” 6 feet 4 inches tall, and at no time did I struggle to find a comfortable position as a driver or passenger. Even the rear seats are reasonable, if not roomy, for someone my size. The exact dimensions are 39.6 inches of headroom and 41.3 inches of legroom at the front, 39.1 inches and 37.2 inches behind, respectively. Cargo volume behind the second row is 28.9 cubic feet.

As a modern Korean car, the list of standard safety and entertainment technologies offered is quite exhaustive. My test car had the highest-end Sport Prestige trim, which means it comes with things like a 12.3-inch 3D instrument display (I hate 3D stuff, it gives me a headache, but you can turn it off) and 14.5-inch infotainment screen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as the duh and upgraded Lexicon stereo system are pretty good. No “Mark Levinson in a Lexus“Good, but close.

Safety tech includes all the highlights like blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control with stop and go and Highway Driving Assist, automatic emergency braking, high beams automatic, front and rear view cameras and remote parking assist. Almost all of the above come standard; Unlike the Germans, Genesis is not in the business of nickel-and-fog you for safety’s sake.

Pricing for the Genesis GV70 starts at a very reasonable $43,995, including a $1,095 destination fee. My fully loaded GV70 3.5 AWD Sport Prestige costs a little less than $66,570. The GV70s competition will include the BMW X3, Audi Q5, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class and Lexus RX, all of which offer similar performance and features for similar money. At the end of the day, I still go with the Genesis because I like the look and the way it drives.

The days when Korean cars became a quirky, cheap option are long gone. Genesis is no longer something you buy because you can’t afford a German car; it’s something you buy because it competes and often beats European competition and does so with style. I would wholeheartedly recommend the GV70 to someone trying to buy into the luxury crossover segment. Actually, I have, with some people. GV70 rules.
