The Rugby Union has recommended banning transgender women from playing women’s rugby, with a vote to be held next week.

The governing body says that only women who were born female are allowed to play the women’s sport.

The recommendation comes after the RFU conducted an extensive review of the gender participation policy for domestic contact rugby in English.

The RFU said it received more than 11,000 responses to a game-wide survey on the matter and listened to multiple views, and reviewed scientific evidence and guidance from other sports bodies. .

A vote on the matter will be taken by the RFU Board on Friday, July 29 with the aim of changing the policy ahead of the 2022/23 season.

A statement from the RFU said “the science that provides the basis for the recommendation that the inclusion of transgender individuals designated as male at birth into female contact rugby cannot be balanced with safety considerations.” completely and fairly”.

It added: “The recommendation is that until new science becomes available, a precautionary approach is appropriate to ensure fair and safe competition by all competitors.

“This is a complex and difficult decision and recommendations are not made lightly or without thorough and complete research and consultation.”

The RFU says that if the recommendation is not approved, the existing policy will remain in effect.

The governing body added that it has been in contact with registered transgender female players “to offer assistance in continuing to encourage them to participate in the sport”.

“Review and consultation concluded that the peer-reviewed study provides evidence that there are physical differences between persons of the sex designated male and those who are not,” the RFU said. female birth and the advantages in strength, stamina, and physique conferred by males.

“The RFU Panel has been provided with access to medical, scientific and social information so that it can consider this recommendation and the merits of any alternative approaches, including the approval process. browse on a case-by-case basis.

“However, assessing each specific case is not without difficulty and may result in players being disqualified from participating.

“Based on the results of research and work by World Rugby and the UK Sport Council, and due to the difficulties in defining a reliable test for the assessment of physiological variables, we recommends that this is no longer a viable option at this time and does not necessarily guarantee inclusion.

“Therefore, the RFU Council will vote on a recommendation to change the policy for contact rugby to only allow female players whose gender is recorded at birth as female.

“In the men’s category, players who propose a gender at birth as female may play if they agree in writing and a risk assessment is performed.”
