Royal Navy destroyer sailors rescue crew of yacht sinking off the Isle of Wight | UK News

Royal Navy sailors from an anti-aircraft destroyer rescued four people after their yacht began to sink off the Isle of Wight.

HMS Diamond had just left Naval Base Portsmouth, Hampshire, on Thursday when it answered a call tomorrow.

A civilian yacht, sailing from the Beaulieu River in the New Forest to Honfleur in France, sounded the alarm after it began taking in “significant” amounts of water.

The warship’s dinghy was loaded onto the yacht and picked up four of the five crew members, who were brought back to Diamond to be examined by medical staff.

They were then taken to the hospital by Newhaven lifeboat.

The crew of the Type 45 destroyer coordinated the rescue operation with the crews of Newhaven and Bembridge RNLI, as well as a French coast guard helicopter.

Three of Diamond’s crew then returned to the yacht and helped the ship’s captain stabilize the ship and return to Great Britain.

Diamond’s commander, Peter Barfoot, said: “When the yacht sent out her distress call, Diamond was nearby and was therefore able to react promptly.

“The ship’s company was able to evacuate and bring on board the crew who needed medical assistance.

“At the same time, several of the ship’s specialists were able to shake hands and provide essential assistance to the captain of the yacht, which ultimately prevented the ship from sinking.
