Royal Enfield Himalayan manufactured from 2017-2021 recalled for brake failure

Royal Enfield has issued a recall for the Himalayan adventure touring car in the US due to possible brake problems. The manufacturer notified the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of 4,891 units of Royal Enfield Himalayan manufactured between March 1, 2017 and February 28, 2021. These examples may experience poor braking or complete brake failure, according to the company. Please note that the recall does not apply to Himalayan models sold in India.

In its announcement, Royal Enfield indicates that brake calipers can be corroded by salt used to treat roads in winter. This can lead to “reduced or complete loss of brake function”. Owners will need to thoroughly clean each brake caliper after exposure to prevent corrosion. The company says the potential fault could cause an unusual or increased brake noise when the brakes are applied. It can also lead to a burning smell near the calipers, and the car feels like it’s dragging when you try to accelerate. Himalayan will also find it difficult to push by hand.

Royal Enfield brake parts suppliers Bosch (for ABS) and Brembo (for calipers) helped solve the problem and Brembo recommended the use of anodized brake calipers to combat corrosion. The manufacturer has only received feedback about the possible issue in the UK but has decided to expand the recall to the US and other markets including Europe and South Korea, where salt is used to clear ice on road in winter. The recall will expand to Europe, the United Kingdom, South Korea and Japan, according to the announcement.

As part of the remedy, dealers will replace the front and rear brake calipers free of charge for the recalled Himalayans. If you are a Royal Enfield Himalayan owner in the United States, you should check with your local dealer about the voluntary recall (recall number – SC-28). With spring coming up in a few days, many riders will want to fix this before hitting the road again.
