Roundup Review For The Knights of Gotham – Can These Heroes Escape the Shadows of Batman?

Review for Knight of Gotham went live, a new sandbox game set in Batman’s iconic playground and starring his patrons. With dead cap crusaders and good looking criminals running through the streets of Gotham, Nightwing, Batgirl, Red Hood and Robin must rescue the city from gangs, super criminals and ancient secret societies.

So far, most critics have not succumbed to Gotham Knights, which comes seven years after Rocksteady’s Arkham trilogy ended in Batman: Arkham Knight. The generic sandbox design, paper-thin combat mechanics, and unnecessary loot system were all criticized, although co-op gameplay and well-written characters were commended.

“Gotham Knights takes Arkham’s blueprints and reimagines it as a looter, which often feels the same, but where it’s different, it’s worse,” wrote Mark Delaney in GameSpot’s Review of Knights of Gotham. “Although the new Guardian is priced well from a narrative standpoint, the gameplay system built to serve their 30-hour campaign to win back Gotham has let the team down.”

GameSpot – 4/10

The strong character work and considered good co-op experience couldn’t salvage all that plagued Gotham Knights, making the experience neither fan-worthy nor the one they needed. now. – Mark Delaney [Full review]

VGC – 8/10

Gotham Knights stepped out of Arkham’s shadow to deliver a great superhero game full of stellar characters. While some of these highlights are downplayed by inconsistent console performance, it’s the best way to game in Gotham that we can’t stop discovering. – Jordan Middler [Full review]

NME – 8/10

A diamond in the rough, the Gotham Knights is a blast but feels like it could do with a little polish. Gotham Knights’ vision of Gotham is compelling and filled with charismatic characters you’ll want to spend time with. There’s almost too much to do here, but you’ll probably be too busy hitting the goons to take care of. – Jake Tucker [Full review]

Game Informer – 73/100

Gotham Knights didn’t surprise me with its all-too-familiar goals, combat, and operations, but it didn’t leave me feeling bitter. It’s fun to take control of some new heroes as they probe Gotham from the building’s overhang and uncover hidden plots against its people. Those heroes are right to wonder if they are living up to a celebrated legacy. And even if they’re not quite the fit to breathe, Gotham has enough bad guys to punch out to have a good time, whoever you are. – Matt Miller [Full review]

VG247 – 6/10

Look, if you want to jump around and punch people, there are hundreds of other games out there. If you really want to play a DC action game that takes a brave and modern take on the big black bat, then Gotham Knights is good enough. It’s just that in the shadow of previous Batman titles, in Batman’s own shadow, it doesn’t impress. It’s disappointing. – Connor Makar [Full review]

Radar Game – 5/10

There’s a gripping gameplay in Gotham Knights, but it’s hidden behind a messy UX, unnecessary crafting and customization systems, and battle mechanics that are stretched as thin as paper to accommodate four heroes. I believe WB Games Montreal has great potential, but this isn’t the game Gotham deserves after Bruce Wayne’s death, and it’s not the game it needs right now after Rocksteady pulls out about Metropolis for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. – Josh West [Full review]

IGN – 5/10

Gotham Knights is a consistently disappointing return to Batman’s troubled city and a marked step back from the Batman games of more than a decade ago. Even running around Gotham in two-player co-op can be quite fun, and each of the four playable crime fighters is well executed in their dialogues and special moves, too many fundamentals for me to recommend it. – Travis Northup [Full review]
