During Monday’s race, Lopez instructed the pony to stand up to press the lead, and after a quarter mile with a record of: 22.63, Steel Drivin Man came out on top to be crowned half a mile with: 46, 81 and went home in 1:06.64 on the fast track.
Same day at Racecourse Pimlico marks first wins for Crown’s Way Racing, NBS Stable, Eduard Dalava and Eli Diamant’s Otago . Florida’s half-blood son Sightstown won the off-court version of the 2-year-old’s 1/16-mile women’s race while sloppy with coach Kelsey Danner.
Otago, ridden by Dylan Davis, leads from the gate, placing the odds: 24.95, :50.74, and 1:15.92 through six stretches before extending his lead in the segment way to win 4 1/4 length in the final time of 1:48.44.
During his debut on August 22 at Colony Downs, Otago finished third. Bred by Courtney Meagher and Speightstown Syndicate, Otago is not part of War Chant mare Mom’s Vice, 3rd grader’s dam Mom’s On Strike (via First Prince ).
Removed by Charlie Marquez, Alva Starr exited the last of the six gates, but made her way to the third and then fourth when a quarter of a mile had entered: 23.28 and a half went in: 47.49. Lord Nelson stealthily pursued the lead into the first leg and split opponents when asked to go, driving home in 1:11.85 on a sloppy track to win 2 3/4 the length.
