Rosario sets record for record-breaking Saratoga encounter

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – You wouldn’t imagine that jockey Joel Rosario is having a big summer in Saratoga.

Rosario, 37, is on the hunt for the final title, a competition led by Irad Ortiz, Jr. Through Thursday’s show, Ortiz had 37 wins, eight times more than Rosario. However, in the qualifying races, Rosario is leading with 10 wins from 19 starts, a remarkable 53% win rate. Next is Ortiz with five people.

With No 10, Rosario is in a position to break the current record of 11 graded wins in a single season in Saratoga. According to Equibase stats, Javier Castellano and John Velazquez share the 11th record. Castellano has won 11 of the 31 classified shares starting in 2015, and Velazquez, who is nearing 1,000 race wins. .

“It was unbelievable what we did so early,” said Rosario. “Thank you to everyone who gave us the opportunity. My agent, Ron Anderson, did a really great job for me. We appreciate opportunities from owners and trainers. “

Rosario is no stranger to success. The Dominican native has been in the top 10 for North American equestrian earnings for 13 years, having a resume chock full of graded wins, including 13 in the Breeders’ Cup. Last year, he had a career year, riding for $32,956,215 and winning his first Eclipse Award as a champion rider.

In 2020, Rosario is the top rated bet winner in Saratoga with seven. Last summer, he finished against Luis Saez to take the top spot in sixth place. This year, he has seven qualifying wins in the first 13 days of a 40-day season.

“We are always looking for a good meeting,” said Rosario, “But, we did very well this year.”

During the first four days of the meet, Rosario won the July 15 GIII Forbidden Apple S. with Man City (Mucho Macho Man) for coach Christophe Clement; GI Diana S. on In Italian (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) to Chad Brown July 16; and GIII Quick Call S. on Great Invasion (Declaration of War) for Clement July 17. He completed the month with three wins for Steve Asmussen: GII Shuvee S. on Claire (Curlin) July 24, GI Alfred G. Vanderbilt S. on Jackie’s Warrior (Music by Maclean) and GII Jim Dandy S. on The epicenter (Not this time).

In August, he won the GII National Racing Museum and S. Ready to Purrform (Kitten’s Joy) for Brad Cox on August 5, and the next day won the GI Test S. Chi Town Lady Verrazano) for Wesley Ward and GII Glens Falls in War Like Goddess (English Channel) for Bill Mott.

Six trainers. Dust. Pitch. Sprint. Roads.

Starting Saturday with GI Alabama and GII Lake Placid, 17 stocks graded in Saratoga season remain. Rosario has mounts on Arrogant (Empire Maker) for Brown in Lake Placid and will ride Gerrymander (Into Mischief) for Brown in Alabama. He is likely a candidate in most of the remaining classified holdings, including Epicenter’s Asmussen trio in GI Runhappy Travers S., Jackie’s Warrior in GI Forego S. and Claire in GI Personal Ensign.

In 2015, six of Castellano’s 11 wins were in Class I races. Velazquez had five I winners in 2005. So far, Rosario has had three.
