Rosario prepares to participate in Oaklawn Jockey Colony Friday

The favorite who won the Eclipse Award as the country’s outstanding driver for 2021 will begin racing in 2022 in Oaklawn.

Joel Rosario is named on seven horses Friday, which will mark his first day as a regular at Hot Springs and his first act since breaking a rib when he was left unbanded shortly after finish the race on December 2 at the Aqueduct.

Rosario ($32,944,478) had her eyes on the North American single-season record for earnings before the injury. Now healthy, Rosario’s return will fall on his 37th birthday.

“He takes care of himself like no one else you’ve ever met,” Rosario’s agent, Ron Anderson, said Saturday afternoon. “He’s especially relevant… his girlfriend is a nutritionist. She taught him how to take care of his weight, what to eat and what not to eat. He is ready to go at any time. It will be six weeks since he fell and he broke his hairline. It’s time to start over. ”

All seven Rosario horses were named Friday to Hall of Famer and longtime Oaklawn training champion Steve Asmussen. Rosario and Asmussen teamed up to win the $2 million GI Breeders’ Cup Minor on November 5 in Del Mar with the undefeated Echo Zulu (Gunman). Rosario won the GI Breeders’ $6M Classic Cup the next day on board Knicks Go for coach Brad Cox.

Cox (12 wins) and Asmussen (11) entered Sunday leading the Oaklawn 2021-2022 coach rankings. Along with Oaklawn’s budget structure, which is the highest in the country this winter, Anderson said Oaklawn is the perfect choice for Rosario, who has enjoyed huge success in Hot Springs, especially in 2020. Rosario wintered last year at Santa Anita, but Anderson has the Hall of Fame with John Velazquez there in 2022. Velazquez’s main client is Hall of Fame coach Bob Baffert.

“We had success with two 1-2 and 2-1 leads there,” Anderson said of Oaklawn. “California winters are not quite what they used to be. Just looking for a change. So we won Brad for; Steve, we won. We won the Breeders Cup for both of them. It’s three days a week and the wallet is amazing. It’s a good place for a change. I also have Johnny’s, and Johnny’s in California, at Bob’s request. Sometimes it’s just the flow of how things feel. Johnny has won the last two Kentucky Derbys for Bob. Bob wants him out there. Joel won the Breeders’ Cup for Brad and Steve. They are the kingpins of Oaklawn. Big wallet. Joel doesn’t bother about that there. He likes it.”

Rosario rode six days in the final weeks of Oaklawn’s 2020 meeting and won 15 races, including the $150,000 Oaklawn Mile S. Tom’s d’Etat (Smart Strike) for Coach Al Stall, $100,000 Rainbow S. GI Arkansas Derby on Nadal’s Court (Blame) for Baffert.

Along with a double in March, including a $1 million GII Rebel S. on Nadal’s court, Rosario finished with a spectacular 17-10-7 record from just 45 rides and amassed amassing $2,030,576 in earnings. Rosario ranks second in terms of wins at meet (five), fourth in pocket earnings and 11th in wins – making it into the top 10 only once – with an eye-popping 38% hit rate. Rosario added three more equity wins at the 2021 Oaklawn meeting, including Rebel for Baffert on board the Concert Tour (Street Sense).

Anderson said Rosario is signed up for the $150,000 Season 5 Concert Tour for older horses on January 15 in Oaklawn, a 1-mile race that will mark the start of the season. pony’s fairy for Cox. Rosario and Cox are scheduled to collaborate again on January 29 at Gulfstream Park when Knicks Go began his final career in the GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational S. $3 million.

“World-class racer,” Cox said on Saturday afternoon. “I mean, there’s no secret about it. He’s a very good driver and I’m glad he’ll be there for the meeting. Hope he cooperates with Knicks Go again in Pegasus and go from there. “

Anderson said Rosario is expected to cycle regularly at Oaklawn through at least early April. Rosario has had 28 career Oaklawn wins, including 12 bets, with his mount earning $4,979,104. In addition to Nadal, Rosario won $200,000 GII Azeri S. and $600,000 GI Apple Blossom H. in 2014 with the final Close Hatches (First Defense) championship for Hall of Fame coach Bill Mott .

A native of the Dominican Republic, Rosario rode his first victory in the United States in 2006. He has had more than 3,000 career victories, including 15 victories in Breeders’ Cup races and three in the races. Triple Crown event, and his mount has earned over $250 million.

In addition to pocket earnings, Rosario leads the country in bet wins (69) and rank bet wins (49) in 2021, according to Equibase. Rosario is looking for her first Eclipse award.

“Look, like I tell everyone, he’s a world-class racer,” Anderson said. “He can go anywhere in the world and can compete. Luckily, we got in there and drove Steve right away. There were some calls with Brad, some calls with Moquett and a few others. We will get it back here. “
