Roof collapse crushed car in Delhi

A roof at Delhi airport collapsed after heavy rains, killing one person and injuring eight others.

Online videos showed large pillars supporting the roof smashing into cars parked along the airport’s Terminal 1.

Airport authorities said all flights from the terminal have been suspended until further notice.

The incident happened at 05:00 (23:30 GMT Thursday).

“While the cause of the incident is being assessed, the main cause appears to be continuous heavy rain over the past few hours,” an airport spokesman said.

Officials said four vehicles were damaged and eight people suffered minor injuries in the incident.

India’s aviation regulator has advised airlines to put passengers on alternative flights or provide refunds.

The accident affected the travel plans of thousands of people because most domestic flights take off from Terminal 1.

Several airlines have shifted their flight operations to the remaining two terminals at the airport.

Authorities at Delhi International Airport said a technical committee has been formed to investigate the cause of the accident.

“We are working with all relevant agencies to assess the situation and restore operations,” they added.

Federal Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu announced compensation of 2 million rupees ($24,000; £19,000) for the families of those who died and 300,000 rupees for those injured.

He also told reporters that the situation was under control and checks were being carried out to prevent any further incidents. He added that additional airports across the country would also be inspected.

The incident has been criticised on social media, with many users pointing out that the station had undergone a major renovation costing billions of rupees and was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March – a month before the recent general elections began.

However, Mr Kinjarapu later said the collapsed section was not part of the renovated section.

“I want to clarify that the building inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi is on the other side and the building that collapsed here is an old building and was opened in 2009,” he said.

Heavy rains have lashed Delhi since Thursday, providing much-needed relief from the sweltering temperatures the Indian capital has experienced since April.

However, the torrential rain threw the city into chaos as many roads were flooded, leading to serious traffic jams.

Commuters said they spent hours stuck in traffic while others said their cars broke down.

Videos shared on social media showed people wading through knee-deep water and cars and buses partially submerged in the subway.

The torrential rain also led to flight delays and cancellations.

The Indian Meteorological Department has forecast “heavy to very heavy rainfall” for the city over the weekend.
