Ronaldo: Police investigating after Manchester United forward appears to break fan’s phone
Merseyside Police are investigating an allegation of assault after Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo appeared to smash a fan’s phone.
Footage has been shared on social media along with comments claiming he smashed the device as he left the field after being around Lost 0-1 to Everton.
Ronaldo, 37, later apologized on social media.
Merseyside Police said they were investigating “reports of an alleged assault” at Goodison Park on Saturday.
A spokesman said they were in contact with both Manchester United and Everton.
“As the players left the field at 2.30pm, it was reported that a boy was assaulted by one of the away teams as they left the field,” they added.
“Investigations are underway and officers are currently working with Everton to review CCTV footage and are conducting extensive witness interviews to determine if criminal activity has occurred.
“Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact the Merseyside Police social media desk via Twitter MerPolCC or Facebook Merseyside Police Contact Center citing reference number 228 April 9, 2020. 2022.”
Manchester United said it was aware of “an alleged incident” and would “cooperate with any police inquiries”.
The result ruined United’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League and had to face an Everton side one point above the relegation zone before the game even started.
“It is never easy to deal with emotions in difficult times like we are facing,” said Portugal international Ronaldo.
“However, we must always respect, be patient and set an example for all young people who love beautiful games.
“I would like to apologize for my outburst and if possible I would like to invite this fan to watch a game at Old Trafford as an expression of sportsmanship and fair-play.”
