Road deaths in the UK remain consistent

A total of 1,558 people have been killed on UK roads by 2021, leading to fears that adequate progress has not been made in reducing deaths.

Last year, there were 7% more deaths than in 2020, although traffic levels in 2021 are not affected in the same way due to Covid congestion. The figure for 2021 actually shows an 11% drop in deaths compared to 2019.

In 2021, however, the critical fatality rate is 5.2 per billion vehicle miles. This is a higher rate than in 2019, although lower than 2020.

With these numbers remaining broadly stable, there is concern that much more needs to be done to significantly reduce UK road deaths. RAC road safety spokesman Simon Williams said: “While the total number of road deaths has fallen to pre-pandemic levels, the death rate per billion miles driven shows an increase. There is little progress being made in making our roads safer.

“We urge the Government to publish an updated road safety plan that focuses on improving car safety – including mandatory technology such as intelligent speed assist in new cars. – as well as measures to address poor driving standards and illegal behind-the-wheel behavior.”

The 2021 casualty rate for those killed or seriously injured on UK roads is similar to 2019, while the casualty rate for all serious cases is lower.

Additionally, 2021 sees a 193% increase in crashes involving e-scooters as tests of the vehicle roll out across the country, while many people continue to use them. Illegally privately owned vehicles on public highways.

Jack Cousens, AA’s head of road policy, commented: “Bringing micro-mobility into the broader national transportation landscape must consider how we can adopt personal mobility technology. new and developing individual without compromising the safety of all road users, including pedestrians”.

Speaking of the broader road safety picture, he added: “The UK has some of the safest roads in the world, sixth in the world league, but ambition needs to be to be The country leads the way in reducing and eliminating road traffic deaths. With a new Ministerial transport team, we are particularly calling on the new Secretary of State to put road safety first and central to her priorities.”
