UK back to Boris Johnson, or next Rishi Sunak? 4 Invaders After Liz Truss Quit

Even before Liz Truss stepped down, five names had emerged as to who would be her pursuers.

Economic policies had to be reversed, a series of ministers and aides resigned, and then the Conservative Party’s loss of confidence in her made this announcement no surprise.

It may come as a surprise that Boris Johnson, her scandalous predecessor, is one of the names on this list.

Popular UK news outlets – Times, Daily Telegraph and BBC – have reports saying he is involved. The Times report cited sources as saying Boris Johnson believes a return to Number 10 Downing Street is a matter of “national interest”.

However, he is not the leader.

That, unsurprisingly, was Rishi Sunak.

Liz Truss, who remains a carer, will end her shortest term as Prime Minister in British history.

The bookie’s favorite, former finance minister Sunak lost the race to Liz Truss just a few weeks ago.

He was followed by Penny Mordaunt and defense secretary Ben Wallace, followed by Jeremy Hunt, the current finance minister. Mr Hunt has said he will not run for office, which puts former Prime Minister Boris Johnson in fourth place on the favorites chart.

The Conservatives – or the Tories, as they are called – still have more power until December 2024, that is if they can find a Chancellor who can survive in the chair. The party will elect a new leader next week, until then Liz Truss remains in the chair.

Here are the likely candidates:

Rishi Sunak became Chancellor of the UK Exchequer Association (currently finance minister) shortly before the Covid pandemic hit in early 2020.

But his wealth means that even within the party doubt he can understand the economic situation of ordinary people choosing to heat or eat.

The son of a financier whose parents are of Indian descent who came to the UK from Africa decades ago, the millionaire is married to Indian tech heiress Akshaya Murty, whose father is NR Narayana. Murthy founded Infosys.

Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordaunt, the two main contenders in another Prime Minister race in the UK.

His alleged tax avoidance by using loopholes has also been questioned. An MP since 2015, the 42-year-old resigned shortly before Boris Johnson did, ravaged by scandals, in July.

Rishi Sunak said in his resignation that the government must “be conducted properly, competently and seriously”.

“I realize this may be my last ministerial job, but I believe these standards are worth fighting for and that is why I am resigning,” he wrote. Then he entered, and lost, the race for the top job with Liz Truss.

Penny Mordauntis currently the Leader of the House of Representatives, coming in third behind Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak in the Tory leadership election.

After being disqualified from the race, she supported Liz Truss. Recently, as the star of Liz Truss fell, Penny Mordaunt wrote a column in the newspaper that “Britain needs stability, not a soap opera”.

The 49-year-old was once a reality TV star and the only woman in the race today.

The BBC calls her “Brexiteer who is famous for the establishment”. She was a prominent supporter of Britain’s departure from the European Union in a 2016 referendum.

Ben WallaceThe 52-year-old Defense Secretary under Boris Johnson and Liz Truss, was the bookies’ favorite when Mr Johnson quit. But he chose not to run.

A former soldier, he said he wanted to focus on “keeping this great country safe”. Then he confirmed Liz Truss.

Just two days ago he said he would quit if Liz Truss didn’t deliver on his promise to spend 3% of UK GDP on defense by 2030.

Boris JohnsonThe ever-colorful and often scandalous former Mayor of London served for more than three years as Prime Minister but had to quit after news of his official house parties during the strike Covid appeared.

However, that was not the only scandal that led to his departure.

Boris Johnson, educated in elite schools, has cultivated a humorous personality over the years.

His writing often gets him in trouble – accusations of racism come up again and again.

He has been a Tory senior for more than two decades now, and support for Brexit is seen as a pivotal moment that propels him into serious politics.
