RimWorld’s Biotechnology expansion introduces families and genetic engineering

Sci-fi colony simulation RimWorld capable of creating some situations that could make The Sims 4 blush, and the newly announced Biotech expansion isn’t likely to change that. Y’see, Biotech introduces the process of pregnancy, child rearing and family. It doesn’t stop there, because now there is also genetic engineering. Your character will also be able to psychically control semi-living machines thanks to a special implant, turning them into your machines. That’s a word for it, anyway.

RimWorld is one of the best survival games on PC, in our opinion.

RimWorld’s new family system sounds like real life. You can choose to take good care of your children, educate them, then send them to be happy and productive members of society. Or you can treat them as a resource, setting up growth bins to train cheap, disposable labor. Gene editing means you can take those little people or adults and do everything from change eye color to turn them into immortal fire-breathing yeti. If you don’t like any of that then you can become a mechanic, commanding legions of emotionless slugs that do all your bidding.

Biotech will be RimWorld’s biggest expansion to date, and is roughly split into two parts. Along with the new expansion, the developers are also releasing a free 1.4 update that brings a ton of changes, from the new lung rot disease to “really useful prices”. For now, the new update is only on the unstable branch of the game, so modders have time to tweak their gear. You can read the full details of the Biotech expansion and update 1.4 here.

We rate RimWorld among the Best survival game and Top management game you can play on PC. Biotech is the game’s third expansion, following 2020’s expansion, which added empires and psychic powers, and last year’s Ideology, which focused on belief systems. That also added to slavery. Australia’s Classification Board Effectively RimWorld is banned on PC in March of this year for violating “against the standards of morality, decency, and decency”. May I say strewth?

RimWorld is on Steam, GOG and Epic game store for £28 / $35/€30. The Biotechnology Expansion released this month.
