Rick and Morty star and co-writer Justin Roiland has been charged with a domestic violence felony in Orange County, California, in connection with a 2020 incident. A criminal complaint was filed in October. May 2020 by the Orange County District Attorney. Roiland appeared in court on January 12 in a pre-trial hearing, where Roiland’s attorney confirmed that there was an offer of guilty plea for him, but did not discuss the details.
The court will reconvene on April 27, and Roland has also been ordered to attend that hearing.
NBC News reported that Roiland pleaded not guilty to the incident in 2020. Charges include one count of domestic violence causing bodily harm and one count of false imprisonment due to intimidation, violence, fraud and/ or deceive. The test date has not been decided yet.
Roiland was arrested and released on a $50,000 bond in August 2020 and charged in October 2020. A protective order was filed in October 2020 and it states that Roiland is not may harass, threaten, or stalk the person named in the order of protection– whose identity is not publicly known. In addition to those rulings, Roiland cannot walk within 100 feet of the person, and it also orders him to surrender any firearms he owns or possesses. The order runs through October 2023. NBC also noted that Roiland and his attorneys did not respond to comment.
Rick and Morty have created a multi-billion dollar franchise that includes toys, video games, action figures and clothing and is one of the most popular adult comedies on television. . Swimming show for adults latest season aired in September 2022, with a seventh season ordered by Cartoon Network as part of a long-term deal for 70 new episodes.
Along with the success of Rick and Morty, Roiland also released High lifea video game he developed through his studio Squach Games in late 2022. It quickly became the best-selling game on Steam and the fourth-most played Xbox game in its launch week.
