Richfield, Minnesota shooting: One student dead, another seriously injured, sheriff says


“This is a tragic day in the city of Richfield,” Sheriff Jay Henthorne said at a news conference.

The superintendent said the shooting happened shortly after noon Tuesday at the Southern Education Center, and when officers arrived, they found two students had been shot on the sidewalk outside the school.

The police chief said the suspects fled the scene shortly after the shooting.

Both students were taken to a nearby medical center and one of the students was unable to cope with his injuries, the sheriff added.

The other student remains in critical condition, the sheriff said. Henthorne did not share any further details about the students.

Law enforcement officials are searching for the suspects but determine if there are no additional threats to nearby schools and the area.

The incident is under investigation. Minneapolis FBI agents also respond to reports of shootings, FBI speak on Twitter. Special agents from the St. ATF’s Paul also responded, that agency speak on Twitter.

“We strongly encourage anyone with information regarding this incident to call the tip line at 1-888-ATF-TIPS,” the chief said. “Our hearts go out to the families, students and communities affected by this terrible and tragic event.”

ONE message Posted on the district 287 website, the Boys’ Education Center serves approximately 200 students from preschool through 21 in special education and alternative learning programs.

Superintendent Sandra Lewandowski said in a statement posted on the website that the building is being evacuated and parents can pick up their students at a reunion location. The district is working to reunite all students with their families and ensure the safety of all school buildings, the announcement added.

“There are no words to describe the bravery of our officers at the SEC and local government today,” Lewandowski said in a statement. “No one has to respond to a tragedy like this, and we are committed to supporting the staff, students and families happily as they recover from this incident.”

“It’s always confusing to understand an incident like this and this is an especially important time to reach out for support. District 287 stands ready to assist our students and staff as needed as we recover. after this tragedy,” the director-general’s statement added.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz speak on Twitter Tuesday afternoon, he was briefed on the situation.

“Our Department of Public Safety is in contact with local law enforcement and we are monitoring the situation closely,” the governor wrote.

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison said on Twitter statement he was “extremely sad and angry” after the shooting.

“My office & I will assist law enforcement & prosecutors in every way possible in tackling this crime and holding those responsible,” Ellison said. “School shootings, mass shootings and gun violence happen all too often – and we must never become numb or insensitive. We must be open to all outrage and Open our minds to all solutions to end it. We must not accept any death and torn life.”
