Riakporhe vs Jumah: Richard Riakporhe’s Reinvention

By staff member BN24 – When he was just a teenager wandering the streets of Aylesbury Estate in south-east London, you’d be forgiven for thinking that some young man named Richard would one day be will not become the role model and main attraction- the Sky Sports Fight Nights event.

17 years later, and that’s exactly what Richard Riakporhe (13-0) will be doing this Saturday night. He doesn’t scream and doesn’t brag – it’s his talent, work ethic and an undefeated record that has earned him an enviable spot on the Sky Sports stadium.

However, back in the mid-’00s, the young Crystal Palace fan aspiring to be a footballer endured a difficult upbringing that lacked positive role models. At just 15 years old, he is a young man with a strong impression of street life, and has witnessed fame and respect when involved in crime.

“It’s a real challenge because, to get respect in the region, you have to participate,” he told Sky Sports in an interview.

“I want people to greet me when I walk down the street. That’s when I got involved in crime. I made the decisions I learned from that. “

“I was led astray by some friends in the area. A few bad decisions sent me into a downward spiral of devastation.”

Things culminated when he was brutally stabbed in the chest by a thug who wanted to steal a mobile phone that Riakporhe didn’t even own at the time.

“I thought I was going to die. I couldn’t breathe,” he explained. “I couldn’t get my words out. There was blood. Everyone panicked.”

Thankfully, the only lasting damage was a scar on his body. He’s a bearded guy not just another statistic. Since then, his dedication to the boxing gym and academic career has turned his life around.

Boxing, as usual, has freed Londoners from a life full of troubles and distorted hopes and dreams. The 32-year-old will instead be competing against fellow British cruiser Lawrence Okolie, who recently made headlines in the capital. Like Okolie, he may even own part of the cruiser world crown relatively soon.

Most recently in the winter of 2018, Riakporhe was a 7-0 newcomer. In just thirteen months, he will embark on a career-defining competition with four wins over stellar opponents. Sam Hyde; now former European champion Tommy McCarthy; reigning European champion Chris Billam-Smith and defending IBO world cruiser champion Jack Massey were both defeated. They had a combined record of 51-1-1.

The Riakporhe earned a legal world ranking as well as the British cruiser title with her victory over Massey. However, a serious hand injury, and Covid-19, ruined his 2020 and 2021. Without fighting for just two years – his momentum has severely stalled.

He returned last October on Boxxer’s Sky Sports debut, knocking out Krzysztof Twardowski on his way to a one-beat win in eight rounds – understandable given he’s away from the ring.

Olanrewaju Durodola was enlisted to secure a stern challenge for Riakporhe just seven weeks later, as the 200-pound candidate sought to make an impact in a clash that was seen as knocking out the WBC. The Nigerian had previously challenged for the WBC belt with Junior Makabu, succumbing in the seventh round, but was defeated in five rounds by Brit. Riakporhe would wait patiently and pick his shots, landing occasionally with a hard left or right hook and then returning with a ramrod jab, not swooping in and ruining his job. His patience and calm leave no room for predators. A statement has been made.

After the match, he declared his desire for success and was confident that he would soon top the tournament, saying a world championship was only “a few games away.”

This Saturday night, Deion Jumah (14-0) delivers his next assignment. They have very similar records, are the same age and were both born in London. But bettors will trust Riakporhe to beat a former British hero. Jumah was originally slated to fight the undefeated Mikael Lawal, who pulled out. At the same time, Fabio Turchi withdrew from facing Riakporhe in the main event. Thus, Riakporhe and Jumah came true.

Jumah has had decent wins against lackluster Sam Hyde and Wadi Camacho (and Chris Billam-Smith is an amateur), but has yet to taste defeat. A victory for him is not out of the question, but it would be an incredible one.

Riakporhe had wins against some of the heaviest cruisers in Great Britain and Ireland, and remained undefeated. He deserves his 7th highest rating with WBC. The All-British World Championship title with Lawrence Okolie and Jack Massey will intrigue UK fighting fans.

Under the guidance of trainer Angel Fernandez, a famous name has now joined the camp in Loughborough. Two-time world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is now a voice of knowledge and wisdom alongside the top class of cruisers.

On this Saturday night on Sky Sports, the next chapter in the career of a cruiser contender opens. Inner strap.

The action performance at OVO Arena Wembley was noted for the large cruiser collision in London between Richard Riakporhe and Deion Jumah; lightweight star Dan Azeez faces former rival Matthew Tinker; Talented athlete Caroline Dubois; undefeated lightweight superman Adam Azim facing Conor Marsden; his undefeated brother Hassan is competing in the weight division; Chris Kongo returns to chase the World title; the debut of London heavyweight star Jamie TKV; Southampton puncher Joe Pigford; the debut of England amateur star Jimmy Lee; Louis Greene and Harry Scarff won the British Welterweight championship belt and super flyweight contender Shannon Ryan will make his debut.
