Rheinmetall develops future main battle tank

Dusseldorf-based Rheinmetall has unveiled the Panther KF51 main battle tank at the Eurosatory 2022 defense show in Paris.

As noted by the company, the KF51 Panther is dubbed the game changer on the future battlefield. The main battle tank concept sets new standards in every area – damage, protection, reconnaissance, network and maneuverability.

With the main armament being the 130mm Rheinmetall Futuristic Gun System, the KF51 Panther provides outstanding firepower against all present and foreseeable mechanized targets. Additionally, other weapon options are also available to provide concentrated firepower for ranged attacks and against multiple targets.

The Rheinmetall Futuristic Gun System (FGS) consists of a 130 mm smoothbore cannon and a fully automatic bullet handling system. The autoloader contains 20 ready bullets. Compared to current 120 mm systems, the FGS offers fifty percent higher efficiency at a significantly longer engagement range. The FGS can fire kinetic energy (KE) projectiles as well as programmable air-launched projectiles and corresponding practice rounds.

An additional 12.7 mm coaxial machine gun for the main armament. Several options for integrating remotely controlled weapon stations (RCWS) provide flexibility for close-by and drone-based defense. The KF51 Panther introduced at Eurosatory 2022 is equipped with Rheinmetall’s new RCWS “Natter” (adder) in variant 7.62.

The ability to integrate a launcher for HERO 120 ammunition from Rheinmetall’s partner UVision into the turret is also possible. This enhances the KF51’s ability to hit targets beyond the direct line of sight.

Panther features a fully integrated protection concept that is comprehensive, weight-optimized, and integrates active, reactive and passive protection technologies. Without a doubt, the most compelling feature of this concept is its ability to actively protect against KE threats. It increases the level of protection without affecting the weight of the system.

Rheinmetall’s Top Attack Protection System (TAPS) blocks threats from above, while a fast-acting ROSY smoke/obscure system hides the KF51 from enemy observation. Furthermore, its digital NGVA architecture allows the integration of additional sensors to detect launch signatures. Thanks to its pre-scene detection, the KF51 Panther is able to recognize and neutralize threats at an early stage. Designed to operate in competitive electromagnetic environments, the KF51 is completely tough against cyber threats.

The KF51 Panther has an innovative operating concept. It is essentially designed for a crew of three: commander and gunner in the turret and rider in the chassis, where there is an additional operating station for a weapons and subsystems specialist or for the commanding staff such as company captains or battalion commanders.

Designed to NGVA standards, the tank’s fully digital architecture allows for seamless integration of sensors and effects both within the platform as well as into a networked “system of systems”. . Sensor and weapon operations can be instantly transferred between crew members. Each operator station can take on tasks and roles from others, while remaining fully functional. As the turret and weapons can also be controlled from operating stations in the chassis, variants of the KF51 Panther with an unmanned turret or fully remote control vehicle are also planned in the future. .

Thanks to the panoramic SEOSS optical sensor and the EMES main combat sight, the commander and gunner can both observe and attack targets independently of each other, day and night, while daylight is stable. and optical infrared integrated laser rangefinder are available to both. In addition, through the display screen in the combat compartment, the crew can observe a 360-degree panoramic view around the vehicle. Integrated, unmanned aerial reconnaissance systems enhance the crew’s situational awareness in built-up areas and in the vicinity of vehicles. With these, the crew can also conduct reconnaissance under the protection of armor and share the results with other agents in a revolutionary manner.

The KF51 Panther builds on the Leopard 2’s mobility concept. With an operating weight of just 59 tons, it offers much greater maneuverability than current systems and has a maximum operating range of approx. 500 km. Without prior preparation, it fits into the AMovP-4L configuration, which no other main battle tank can do. Thus, the tactical and strategic mobility of the KF51 sets it apart.
