Review ‘Twinkle Star Sprites’ – Like a Shooting Star – TouchArcade

If I could link a common theme among all of NEOGEO’s most popular games, it would be named “games you might enjoy playing with friends”. Some of those games, such as metal slugs And Warring States 3, is of a cooperative nature. Others, like king of warriors And Samurai Warriors, are competitive games. Of course, some genres fit one style or another more naturally. Beat-em-up meaningful cooperation. One-on-one fighters are another natural fit. Sparkling Stars ($3.99) is a rare shooter that chooses violence between players and that’s exactly what makes it so great.

Unlike many games we’ve seen in the ACA NEOGEO lineup so far, Sparkling Stars has been around for several years in the life of the SNK console. It was a 1996 release, and it will eventually be the last game released by the ADK developers on the system before they move to support SNK’s handheld NEOGEO Pocket. It’s an unusual game for sure, but it’s not hard to see what inspired it. Shooting games have always been a reliable money maker in video games and competitive puzzle games have started to sell out later Puyo Puyo. Why not try combining them?

Thus, the competitive shooting game was born. At least I think this is where it was born. It was definitely the first idea of its kind that I remember seeing, and it was an idea that took me a while to start working on. Shooters typically see you make your way through carefully planned stages, gaining power-ups, blowing up everything in sight and taking down giant bosses. Sometimes the aim is to reach an end, but usually it’s about getting a high score. If there’s multiplayer support, it’s usually in the form of having another player jump in and help.

Sparkling Stars throw each player into their own half of the screen. The player must kill the enemy in the usual way, with a basic shot, a charged shot and a limited amount of bombs as the main tools to do so. But there is no stage ending or final boss waiting for you. No, your enemy is another player. By blowing up enemies in chains, you will send attacks to another field. If they hit the player, they take damage. Naturally, enemies can also deal damage. Whoever runs out of lives first loses, but the final blow can only come from the remaining player.

What’s really cool is that you can hit the attacks your opponent sends to your screen, and that way you’ll hit them back with some extra mustard on you. After a few volleys, the attacks start to get really nasty, spawning invincible enemies and even bosses. It takes too long to win and Death will appear, but even Death can bounce towards your enemies on the screen. It’s a wild one, and if you have two players getting along well, matches can get completely chaotic in every best way.

And that thingMy friends, where is the rubbing. Sparkling Stars there are single player modes and they are as extensive as any arcade head-to-head puzzle game. But the real core of the game lies in that multiplayer mode, as the CPU can never be fun playing with another player. While you can play mobile ACA NEOGEO the game has two players, ideally you need a couple of external controllers to do so. There are no wireless or online multiplayer options available here, and you obviously can’t use both touch controls on one device. It really affects the appeal of this game.

In other words, it’s the usual Hamster set of options and extras. The proper touch controls work pretty well with this type of game. External controller support for those who prefer that way and have the means. Lots of video, audio, controls and difficulty options to tweak to your liking. Additional modes allow you to test yourself against others on the online leaderboards. Your choice of Japanese or foreign versions of the game. A definitely all-round package for this adorable little game and the price is definitely more than reasonable.

Sparkling Stars play well on mobile in a mechanical sense. The controls work well enough, it runs as smoothly as before, and you get plenty of options and features. Like I said, similar to fighting games that have been brought to mobile ACA NEOGEO lines, relatively complex and specific means to play with another person really make a number of the appeal of this game. You can still have fun with Sparkling Stars fight? Sure. It may even be enough to justify dropping some coins to buy it. But this is definitely not Optimal way to enjoy everything this game has to offer.
