Review of the new Volkswagen T-Roc R-Line 2022

While we think some of the cabin’s ergonomics have taken a step back, there’s still a lot to like about the T-Roc in general. Be careful with the options list, though – with some extras our test car came out for £38k.

This is a new device for 2022 Volkswagen T-Roc; a model that has brought great success to the German brand since its appearance. More than a million of these Compact SUV has been changed since its launch just five years ago, but with increasingly intense competition, VW has seen fit to give one of its most popular models a nip and pin.

Most of the styling changes to the well-groomed T-Roc are focused on lighting. All models feature LED technology at the front, while the grille takes inspiration from the latest Polo and Golf by using a thin lighting strip extending the two headlights. The rear units, which are also LEDs, have a movement indicator. The wheel design has also been refreshed, and there are one or two changes to the exterior color scheme; Our test car was finished in Ascot Grey, a free option.

Inside, there are some more significant changes. The most obvious point is in the center of the dashboard, where the layout has been reconfigured to fit within a new, larger ‘floating’ touchscreen. Eight-inch screen comes with 3D, wireless navigation Apple CarPlay and Android Autoand a pair of USB-C ports – two more are found in the rear for rear-seat passengers.

The new design also offers an improvement in perceived quality – one of our criticisms of the car before the facelift. The dashboard is covered in softer plastic than before, and the touch points all feel superbly standard next to most of the competition.

Lowering the dashboard, the old physical switches for the climate control system are gone and replaced by a set of sensitive touch keys. If you want to adjust the temperature or fan speed, you can swipe or tap the sliders to adjust them. While there’s a bit of groove to allow your fingers to find them a little easier, they’re still not very intuitive.

At least when we’ve previously tried the T-Roc in the lower trim level, it has physical buttons on the steering wheel. They are straight forward, look neat and get the job done.

However, this model has touch buttons that are sensitive to haptic feedback types, and we do not sell them at all. Their feedback is inconsistent, they feel uncomfortable to use, and it’s too easy to accidentally skip a track, radio station, or accidentally change the volume. The layout is largely similar to the physical keys on the standard steering wheel, but they’re much less tactile when in use. Both the wheel keys and the climate control have a radically altered feel for aesthetics rather than function. We think both are examples of bad design.

At the very least, it’s hard to fault realism. Although the T-Roc is 45mm shorter than the Golf, the raised roofline means it’s even more spacious inside. Rear headroom and knee space are both excellent, while a 445-liter trunk is 64 liters on a Golf. There’s a movable false floor there, giving you the choice between maximizing space or having a load-bearing environment.

Very little has changed to the way the T-Roc works, which means that buyers will get the same sense of certainty and reassurance that is characteristic of almost any VW on sale today. The steering is precise and fairly light, so it’s easy to drive around town, expertly swerving around corners and with plenty of grip, while at highway speeds it feels steady and comfortable. completely assured.

Our test car was also equipped with adaptive dampers. They are a £1,065 option, allowing the driver to adjust the firmness of their response. We will keep them in a softer environment; As such, the T-Roc is slightly more comfortable than its standard passive dampers, while the stiffer setting removes some of the comfort without any significant improvement in handling. body control. Either way the improvement is slight, so most buyers should be happy to save cash and stick with the standard setup.

Under the bonnet is a tried and tested 1.5-lite TSI engine, and it’s hard to knock. Here it makes 148bhp, which in a relatively compact car like the T-Roc translates into a lot of performance. It may have more power than the average buyer needs in something like this, but given the impressive mpg numbers it returns it’s hardly any different from the smaller 1.0-litre TSI unit – despite the 40bhp power advantage – we wouldn’t recommend anyone go for the more powerful option.

Elsewhere in the range, buyers can opt for a 2.0-liter petrol engine with 187hp and all-wheel drive, and two 2.0-liter diesels with 113hp and 148hp – the latter also available available with four-wheel drive. There is also a high performance T-. Roc R with 296bhp.

Officially, the T-Roc 1.5 TSI will hit 46.3 mpg. In the real world, that seems pretty accurate; we hit high thirty/forty low mpg around town and peaked at 50mpg on steady highways.

It’s a pity that the DSG transmission isn’t quite up to the same high standard. Most of the time it’s fine, but traveling at low speeds – especially in reverse – is prone to jerks, which can make parking in tight spots or on steep inclines a bit stressful.

However, there is only one more problem, and that is the price. This T-Roc, complete with a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine, automatic transmission and premium R-Line trim, starts at £33,095. With options, including a panoramic sunroof (£1,150), Matrix LED headlights (£1,650), the very impressive Beats hi-fi system (£470) plus adaptive dampers, and a price tag all up to £38,080 . We really don’t believe the T-Roc feels special enough to justify that price.
