Review of the new Ford Grand Tourneo Connect 2022

Identify

It may be a restorative exercise, but Ford’s VW Caddy’s version of the Grand Tourneo Connect is an impressive vehicle that offers incredible practicality, powerful efficiency, good value, and powerful technology. Like many other Ford models, it also drives well and makes the most sense in the diesel automatic tested here, even if it sits at the bottom of the lineup in the Active version. Today, many buyers may prefer an SUV, but for those with an active, outdoor lifestyle, the Grand Tourneo is definitely worth checking out.

Ford Grand Tourneo Connect is the first result of the cooperation between the American giant and Volkswagen. The two have signed an agreement that will involve Ford improved some models of passenger cars of the German company (including EVs which we’ll see soon), while VW will do the same with Ford commercial vehicles – including forest ranger pickup truck.

The markings are clear with this car, especially on the inside, as the Grand Tourneo Connect’s dashboard layout is lifted directly from the VW Caddy.

In many ways, this is not a bad thing. You get a lot of equipment on our high-spec Active model, including a 10-inch infotainment screen with the latest smartphone connectivity and sat-nav. However, because it’s a VW system, and not Ford’s, the previously annoying touch-sensitive climate and volume controls are also present. That means it’s not the easiest to use, even if your graphics and input response are sharp.

You also get heated and air-conditioned front seats, keyless entry and 17-inch alloy wheels housed in black plastic surrounds. This, and similar trim on the bumpers and sills, gives the Grand Tourneo Connect seven seats SUV– look full of emotion. Ford calls it the Multi-Active Vehicle, but you’ll know it as a regular vehicle MPV or carrier, and even this £29,350 diesel automatic model in long-wheelbase form still offers good value for money given the space and kit on offer. Cheaper models are available.

Road test

While the brand may have tried to give it a cross look, Ford (or should it be VW?) can boast of practicality here. The large sliding doors allow excellent access to the spacious cabin. There’s simply plenty of legroom in the back and headroom will never be an issue; Young children should be able to stand in the back seat without touching the roof pad.

Access to the third row of seats is a bit more complicated; Ford says all rear seats fold and flip, so you get there by folding the second row out and climbing in.

In the seven-seat configuration, boot space is limited, but not as much as you might think. There’s still plenty of room for suitcases and weekend bags, while with all the seats, Ford will still swallow a golf bag in its load compartment; With all the rear seats removed, it will also have a length of up to 2.2m, while having a total load space of 3.1m2, so it can also double as a truck.

Our test car was powered by a 120hp 2.0-liter TDI and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. With 320Nm of torque, it’s powerful, delivering crisp performance even when fully loaded on board. The gearbox changes are quick and the tweaking is intense – it reminds you just how far a diesel engine can stand if it’s run properly.

Speaking of which, based on VW’s MQB platform, the Grand Tourneo Connect shows van-like practicality that doesn’t have to be at the expense of handling or comfort as its handlebars are appropriately weighted and provide accuracy. Thanks to the car’s height, there’s some body roll, but the suspension accommodates this quite well. Delivers claimed performance of 53.3mpg and 140g/km CO2 and it’s a solid dynamic performance.
