Want a luxury SUV with the ability to go anywhere? Grand Cherokee might fit the bill.
For CEOs who want to move their desks to the top of a mountain or the beach, Jeep has a solution. The Grand Cherokee is a unique proposition that delivers the luxuries you’d expect from a top-of-the-line SUV, but with the capabilities of an off-roader wherever you go. But how good is it exactly?
Jeep Grand Cherokee 2022: exterior design
In its fifth generation, the Grand Cherokee has matured and caught up with today’s times, and it has done so without breaking its core trait, which is a powerful and valuable SUV. It is marked in the box present on the road nearly five meters long and nearly two meters wide. And if you think it’s a combination of Compass and Meridian, you’ll hesitate a bit when you spot one in the flesh, especially black.
It’s a simple design with a dominant seven-bar grille at the front and adds some perceived width. The sleek and traditional rectangular LED headlight is well-suited to this role, and in the rearview mirrors of other diminutive cars it has an imposing appearance. On the side, chunky 20-inch wheels fit snugly into the wheel arches, but Jeep could have gone with a more interesting design, giving two-tone alloys for added appeal.
The 20-inch wheels enhance the appeal of the butch.
At the rear, it’s as simple as that with a single slim chrome strip on the bumpers and sleek LED taillights. There are no sturdy exhaust tips or dramatic lighting. It’s all clean and simple, which doesn’t do much for the typical luxury car audience that wants a bit of glitz and jazz, but it stays true to its roots and personality.
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee: interior, space
Step inside, or rather climb in, and you’ll be greeted with a layout that’s not only modern but also rough and tough. The functional, all-black interior is easy to care for on adventures and the spaciousness of the cabin is a huge plus. The width of the cabin is enough room for two large seats that are extremely comfortable and supportive, along with the right amount of cushion.
In addition, the front seats are also equipped with 8-way power adjustment and the driver’s seat is also equipped with a memory function. Ventilation and heating are also available for the front seats, meaning you have everything you need to spend many hours here. Although a massage function after a hard day it will complete the package.
The center console is dominated by the touchscreen, but also has a nice mix of dark hole-punch wood, lots of piano black and brushed aluminum, and thankfully, plenty of buttons and knobs. ease of use and convenience. The center armrest is large enough for loose items, and the door pads also have enough storage space. And while the widespread use of leather feels luxurious, the quality in some areas and the plastics could have been better.
The chunky steering wheel is also heated, and you might wonder what it needs in India, but the winter in the north is cold enough to make it seem like a charm. What’s also great is that the driving position and the position of the dashboard allow the driver to have a sweeping view. Small details like the sun visor with an extension to cover the entire window, are appreciated.
The rear seats are set low, but comfortable and spacious.
In the back, since the Grand Cherokee in India is the standard version and not the ‘L’ you get a bench without a third row of seats. Therefore, the space is good enough and despite being AWD, the transmission tunnel is also relatively flat. The seat, like in the front, is comfortable, but the position is low and that prevents it from having the theater-like seating position of most SUVs and also requires you to kneel. The seats may seem short, especially if you have long legs, but they are enough for most adults.
However, knee and headroom is good enough with some space for your feet under the front seats. For added comfort, you can also recline the backrest, which makes the seat a lot more comfortable. The huge panoramic sunroof is a bonus along with sunshades for the rear window. Passengers sitting in the middle will also not be too uncomfortable because there is enough legroom and headroom.
Taking advantage of the absence of a third row of seats is the trunk that can hold up to 1,076 liters of luggage and is also quite easy to load. The electric tailgate opens quickly and the trunk also houses an 18-inch space-saving wheel under the floor.
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee: features, equipment
True to the name luxury SUV, the Grand Cherokee has a lot of accessories. The 10.1-inch touchscreen is smooth and responsive, and while it takes a while to use, it includes lots of things like wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, terrain and temperature information for essentials such as oil, engine and gearbox. Then there’s the 360-degree camera with washers for the front and rear, equally navigating when you’re in the middle of a rock and a difficult place.
The rear display is extremely useful.
Also impressive are the power sockets provided. Two Type C ports along with two USB A ports, wireless charging, one HDMI port, one 3.5mm AUX port and one charging socket on the front. And two Type-C ports along with two USB A ports and a three-pin socket on the rear make it the perfect excuse to make it your workstation.
There is also a seat heating function for the rear seats, especially for when you take your family to explore the Himalayas. A neat touch is the sharp display on the rearview mirror that projects real-time footage through the rear camera, and a personal screen for the front passenger to entertain. However, the audio output is not connected to the Alpine 9-speaker system, meaning that if you’re playing a movie on the monitor, you’ll need your own audio in the form of Bluetooth speakers/headphones or an AUX cable.
Limited use of passenger screens.
Safety is also emphasized with eight airbags, ABS with EBD, ESC, TPMS, hill start and all your basic electronic nannies plus level 2 ADAS features like blind spot monitoring, control adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, automatic braking and cross-traffic alert.
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee: engine, performance
Powering the Grand Cherokee is a 2.0-liter gasoline engine with 272 hp and 400 Nm of torque, combined with ZF’s 8-speed automatic transmission. Right from the start, the engine quashed any assumption of being unsuitable for a vehicle of this size. It’s refined and smooth, and the linear acceleration makes it sound like a diesel.
The 2.0-litre petrol engine is smooth and has enough power.
The twin-scroll turbocharger took a moment to kick in and after a bit of hesitation, the Grand Cherokee took the lead. The midrange is where the magic is. Hold the gyroscope here and the Cherokee can cruise without much effort. However, being a petrol engine, throttle response is better and as a result, overtaking is also easy.
The transmission is smooth and eager to shift gears early, so when it hits the gas, it will have to drop a few gears before it gets ahead. There’s also a Sport mode that speeds up the engine and transmission, but the initial lag remains. Still, the fine-tuning is impressive, and it’s only when you push the engine past 4,000rpm that it sounds tense. But for a 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol unit that has to travel on a two-ton SUV, it performs very well.
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee: ride and handling
The suspension on the Grand Cherokee is also a highlight. Having steel springs available instead of air suspension might seem less complicated, but on Indian roads with more bumps than bumps it’s the better option. Also, unlike the air suspension, the conventional setup is easier to maintain and a lot more solid off-road. On rough roads, however, the Cherokee drove with great confidence, eliminating cracks and potholes. That said, at high speeds, through the expansion joints, there is a bit of vertical movement thanks to the soft setting.
Speaking of which, the soft suspension also results in noticeable body roll in corners, and the result is handling like you’d expect in an SUV that weighs more than two tons. The new Grand Cherokee is based on the same platform as the Alfa Romeo Stelvio – an SUV aimed at driving enthusiasts – but there have been some changes to the chassis setup and it is more Indian. As a result, in corners, it leans and although the 265-section tires are wide enough to grip the road, it still has a bit of a lack of steering. That is, of course, if you drive it like a sedan. Beyond the rudimentary, the Cherokee becomes its own.
Off-road mode to go further.
Quadra-Trac 1 all-wheel drive is advanced enough to take you to the most remote locations, along with Selective Terrain modes that let you choose between Auto, Mud/Sand and Snow. It can be said with certainty that if there is a small road leading to where you want to go, the Grand Cherokee will get you through it.
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee: price, verdict
With the previous version, price was the biggest obstacle for the Grand Cherokee. However, with this new version, it is no longer available. The Grand Cherokee is assembled at the Ranjangaon factory, which has allowed Jeep to price it at Rs 77.5 lakh (former showroom, India). Now, if that seems like a tough question, know that every similarly sized European SUV is around Rs 10 lakh more expensive and a lot less capable. Yes, the Jeep isn’t as flashy as the Merc, as fun to drive as the BMW or as complex as the Audi, but it has an appeal that no other SUV has.
It’s simple and no-nonsense with a focus more on function than form.
It can really take you to uncharted places and connect with the adventurer in you, and it’s there, specifically, for a specific audience who want to do specific things. If you can get rid of the badge value, need a powerful SUV that can go anywhere with lots of kit and are really going to use it for its intended purpose, then the Grand Cherokee is unmatched.
