Whatever you think of the styling, BMW’s latest X6 is a competitive coupe SUV. Its steering and gear characteristics aim to be top of the class and it performs well too, with the X6M being an absolute miss. The diesel versions still make the most sense in terms of running costs and good drivability, while thanks to a larger cabin than before, interior practicality is also good. However, it was a competitive class and while not Audi neither Mercedes Rivals handle it pretty neatly, they’re still attractive alternatives, so the new X6 isn’t quite a leader.

Its more coupe-like styling isn’t an obstacle to the practicality it could have been. BMW extended the X6 for the latest generation, finding more space between the wheels and expanding the cabin and trunk. While you don’t get a seven seat option like you do in X5 where the X6 shares almost everything, still has a large trunk, a rear cabin that can accommodate even taller frames, and the interior is generally roomy, comfortable and well-built.

There’s a wide range of useful engines, including everything from affordable six-line diesel models with economies approaching the 40mpg mark, to the X6 M Competition being one of the few SUVs you can weigh. prompt to take it anywhere near a circuit, and not just because it is towing a single-seater race car. All X6s perform well, with a good balance of travel and handling and long-distance comfort – although the X6 removes that ride quality factor from its own equation, quite rough on typical UK roads.

The trim levels come as no surprise with the regular Sport and M Sport versions offered in combination with the 40i petrol and 30d/40d diesel models. Standard kit includes 19-inch alloys, adaptive LED headlights, heated front sport seats in Vernasca leather, an automatic tailgate and BMW’s Live Cockpit Professional infotainment setup.

It’s a prime example of its kind, lining up against rivals like Audi Q8 and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe – other SUVs, following BMW’s lead with the original X6, have received more sloping rooflines and traded off ultimate practicality for a more skimpy style. The X6 doesn’t quite hit the mark like those two, it drives better but doesn’t feel particularly comfortable behind the wheel, nor is it perhaps quite as pleasing to the eye. As always, the X6’s styling continues to divide opinions as much as its mere existence.
