Review Mahindra XUV300 TurboSport 2022, test drive: price, operation, features – Introduction

If you want the thrill of driving a compact SUV, Mahindra now has an option for you.

We got a taste of the Mahindra XUV300 TurboSport on the gymkhana track, where it proved to be excellent drivability, but what remains to be seen is its actual performance.

2022 Mahindra XUV300 TurboSport: performance

Let’s start with the heart of the matter, the engine. Although it’s called TurboSport, an important point to remember is that the regular mFalcon petrol engine is also turbocharged. However, what sets the mStallion engine apart in the TurboSport is that it is a direct-injector with variable valve timing. As a result, this has increased power and torque to 131 hp and 230 Nm, 19 hp and 30 Nm more than the regular petrol XUV300.

The mStallion130 is not only more powerful but refined even at high rpm.

Interestingly, there’s also an overboost function that provides an extra 20Nm of torque, which comes in when more power is needed. The system relies on this demand under certain driving conditions, such as the throttle being over 70 percent, gears being between second and sixth gears, and when the engine is running between 1,750 to 3,500 rpm. Check all these boxes and you will be satisfied with the end result. Power delivery is linear in the bottom section, and once the needle enters the middle band, there’s a strong surge and the car rushes forward with urgency. Therefore, the crossing is quite easy and easy; once you’ve done that, it’s best to shift gears, as power will slowly drop past the 4,000rpm mark.

No modifications to the suspension mean a smooth and comfortable ride on bad roads.

Acceleration is absolutely swift and the TurboSport does a 0-100 km/h time of just 10.8 seconds – faster than any compact SUV on sale. It’s safe to say, tuning professionals should have no trouble pushing it below the 10-second mark.

What’s also impressive is the refinement of the engine, which despite being a three-cylinder operates smoothly even when you hit the gas hard – dual mass flywheel (also available on the standard XUV300) do its job.

2022 Mahindra XUV300 TurboSport: gearbox

Another positive for driving enthusiasts is that the TurboSport is only available with a 6-speed manual transmission. The gears are evenly spaced, the ports are well defined but the clutch stroke is long, as is the clutch stroke. Clutch bite point is early and therefore has a long stroke.

The metal pedals have a fancy look that adds to the sportiness. However, the clutch travel is too long.

Along with the added power and torque, Mahindra also claims that the XUV300 TurboSport will be more fuel efficient. It gets a claimed iCAT performance of 18.2kpl (1.2kpl over the standard car), although we need to put it through our testing to find out exactly how effective it is.

Aside from the engine, not much has changed in the overall dynamics. Steering, feel and response are the same, which means it’s light and airy, but not communicative. There are drive modes to choose from, and while they make a difference in weight, steering effort is inconsistent throughout the turn.

No raspy exhaust is a miss. Owners will want to consider aftermarket options.

Driving is always a highlight on the XUV300 and in TurboSport, the story is the same. It helps to keep the car comfortable on bad roads, but a sturdier setting contributes a lot to the ‘sport’ character in the TurboSport.

Stopping ability is also good, with all-wheel disc brakes and strong bite force ensuring safety.

2022 Mahindra XUV300 TurboSport: design and interior

To distinguish the TurboSport, the exterior gets a new ‘Blazing Bronze’ paint color and some red details, along with a new Twin Peaks logo. It is similar to the Hyundai Venue N-Line, but without the twin tailpipes sticking out.

The TurboSport has an all-black interior, but feels like an older generation.

On the inside, the dashboard feels like an older generation, and although you get a suite of accessories like dual-zone climate control and a sunroof, the cabin lacks modern touches. Despite this, the spacious interior is always appreciated along with a high level of safety. The XUV300 has received a 5-star crash test rating by Global NCAP and receives important safety features such as six airbags, ABS with EBD and ESC.

2022 Mahindra XUV300 TurboSport: price and review

The TurboSport is offered in three variants – W6 (10.35 Rs lakh), W8 (11.65 Rs lakh) and W8(O) (12.75 Rs lakh) (all prices, ex showroom) – Rs 36,000-49,000 more expensive than the standard petrol version. It continues to be the most expensive sub-4m compact SUV available, and that’s a bit of a problem.

With a good engine and a good driving feel like when driving on an open winding road, TurboSport takes the leading position in the price segment.

For a little premium, you get a much better driving SUV.

Outdated interiors and small trunk space are compromises you’ll have to accept. But if you appreciate a good engine and want an everyday driver that delivers an enjoyable driving experience, then the TurboSport is a very good choice.
